Pope Calls for Helmets After England E-Scooter Photos Stir Media Interest

Ollie Pope has urged England’s cricketers to observe safety regulations after images emerged of some players riding e-scooters in Brisbane without helmets. Among those pictured were captain Ben Stokes, wicketkeeper Jamie Smith and pace bowler Mark Wood.

Queensland law requires riders of personal mobility devices to wear approved helmets, with fines of A$166 (£82) for breaches. Pope’s advice was simple: “Just put a helmet on next time. Rules are rules. No other comment from me.”

The England squad is preparing for the second Ashes Test at the Gabba, a day-night match under lights beginning at 04:00 GMT on Thursday. The team has attracted sustained media attention throughout the tour, including coverage of their Perth arrival, golfing trips, and visits to local attractions.

After a heavy loss in the first Test, criticism of the team’s performance and attitude has intensified. Former Australian paceman Mitchell Johnson called the side “arrogant.” England are trailing 1-0 in the series but plan a break in Noosa, north of Brisbane, following the second Test, regardless of the outcome.

Pope, now on his second Ashes tour, reflected on the difference compared to his previous trip during strict Covid restrictions. “Locking yourself away isn’t healthy. Taking a break from cricket even for a short time is essential. If the media catch us, so be it. Maintaining balance on a long tour is vital,” he explained.

England have confirmed their playing XI for the second Test, with Will Jacks drafted in for the injured Mark Wood.
