Case Filed After Violent Attacks on Police Installations in Chapainawabganj

Chapainawabganj, Bangladesh — Police have filed a formal case following a wave of violent attacks on a police box and outpost in Chapainawabganj town, triggered by public outrage after the deaths of two young men in a road accident. The incident involved vandalism, looting, and arson, raising serious concerns about public order and security in the district.

The case was lodged on Saturday afternoon at Chapainawabganj Sadar Model Police Station by Sub-Inspector Shakil Ahmed. Additional Superintendent of Police Wasim Firoz confirmed the development, stating that law enforcement agencies have already arrested nine individuals in connection with the violence.

“Investigations are ongoing, and further arrests will be made following detailed analysis of CCTV footage and other evidence,” Wasim Firoz said, adding that those responsible would be brought to justice in accordance with the law.

Officer-in-Charge of Sadar Police Station, Nur Alam, said the case has been filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act. “The case names both identified and unidentified suspects, totalling around 300 accused persons,” he explained. The charges include attacks on police installations, large-scale vandalism, looting of government property, and setting fire to police facilities.

The unrest erupted on Friday afternoon following a tragic road accident at Circuit House Mor in Chapainawabganj town. Two young men — Rifat Ali and Sohag Ahmed — were killed when their motorcycle crashed while reportedly attempting to evade a police checkpoint. Local residents alleged that the accident occurred as a result of a police chase, claiming the riders lost control while fleeing.

Enraged by the incident, protesters blocked roads and staged demonstrations, accusing the police of responsibility for the deaths. The situation quickly escalated, culminating in coordinated attacks on a nearby police box and outpost. Protesters reportedly vandalised structures, looted equipment, and set parts of the facilities ablaze.

Normalcy was restored later that night following joint operations by the Bangladesh Army and the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB). Once security forces dispersed the protesters, vehicular movement resumed and the area was brought under control.
