A violent four-hour clash erupted between two local factions over the eviction of a tea stall in Thaliara village, located under Natai North Union of Brahmanbaria Sadar Upazila, on Sunday. Equipped with helmets, protective body jackets, and an array of domestic weapons, the clashing groups left at least 15 people injured. The violence also severely disrupted local infrastructure, completely halting traffic on the Natai-Ashtagram regional highway for three hours. The confrontation began at 9:00 am and persisted until 1:00 pm before law enforcement managed to restore order.
The dispute involved the Mindan Ali house (known locally as the “Small Faction”) and the Bhuiyan house (referred to as the “Middle House Faction”), both residing in Thaliara village. The Mindan Ali faction is led by Mohammad Zobayer, whilst the Bhuiyan house faction is headed by Mohammad Joynal Abedin. Long-standing tensions regarding regional dominance between these two families culminated in the recent dispute over a commercial stall.
According to police and local residents, an individual named Shiru Miah (also referred to as Jaru Miah by local representatives) operated a tea stall near the pond adjacent to the Bhuiyan residence. The stall regularly broadcasted television programmes, causing large crowds to gather daily around the shop and the nearby pond ghat. Passersby alleged that men within these gatherings frequently directed inappropriate comments at women and young girls. Consequently, Mohammad Zobayer’s faction demanded the removal of the stall to prevent further public disturbances.
Although a recent village arbitration (salish) ruled in favour of evicting the tea stall, Mohammad Joynal Abedin’s faction opposed the decision and blocked its implementation.
The unresolved eviction dispute triggered verbal arguments at 9:00 am on Sunday, which quickly escalated into open warfare. Observers noted that the participants—spanning various demographics including teenagers, young adults, men, and women—wore helmets and protective chest jackets to shield themselves. They confronted each other using traditional and imported weapons, including spears, ekkaittas (a type of local spear-like weapon), sticks, knives, sabres, and Chinese axes.
Using corrugated iron fences as portable barricades along the road, the opposing sides hurled bricks and petrol bombs at one another. The violence spilled from the village interior onto the Natai-Ashtagram regional highway and adjacent agricultural fields. The road blockage directly inconvenienced pedestrians and students from Ashtagram High School. During the riot, multiple houses and shops belonging to both factions were assaulted, vandalised, and subjected to arson.
The confrontation resulted in at least 15 injuries, including several women. Three individuals received emergency treatment at Brahmanbaria General Hospital. Among them, one victim whose back had been pierced by an ekkaittas weapon was transferred to Dhaka for advanced clinical surgery due to the severity of the trauma.
Upon receiving reports of the riot, multiple operational teams from the Sadar Police Station and personnel from the Brahmanbaria Fire Service and Civil Defence Station arrived at the scene around 11:00 am. Joint efforts eventually brought the situation under control by 1:00 pm.
Yakub Ali Bhuiyan, the President of the Natai North Union unit of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), confirmed that the failure of one faction to adhere to the previous arbitration ruling concerning Jaru Miah’s tea stall caused the riot. Efforts to contact the faction leaders, Mohammad Zobayer and Joynal Abedin, were unsuccessful as their mobile phones remained switched off.
The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Brahmanbaria Sadar Police Station, Mohammad Shahidul Islam, stated that a relatively minor issue regarding a tea stall eviction escalated into a major clash between the small and large factions. He confirmed that police units intervened to bring the village under control by 1:00 pm. Four suspects have been detained for their alleged involvement in the rioting. The OC added that formal legal action would be pursued once written complaints are submitted by the aggrieved parties, and extra police contingents have been stationed in Thaliara village to prevent reprisal attacks.
