A fatal stabbing involving local “adolescent gang” factions occurred in Badarganj, Rangpur, on Tuesday, 5 May 2026. The victim, identified as Ariful Islam, a 30-year-old van driver and son of Rezaul Islam from the Pathanpara area of the municipality, succumbed to his injuries following an indiscriminate attack. Police have since apprehended one suspect, 22-year-old Jamal Hossain, in connection with the incident.
According to witness testimonies and briefings from the Badarganj Police Station, the violence originated earlier in the day at the Rangpur Court premises. Five members of a local gang, including an individual named Mominul, had travelled to the court to attend a scheduled hearing for an existing legal case.
Simultaneously, members of a rival gang faction, led by Firoz Shah—commonly known by the alias “Murder Firoz”—were also present at the court for the same proceedings. An altercation broke out within the court precincts when Firoz’s associates launched an assault on Mominul’s group. During this initial confrontation, Mominul sustained a nasal fracture, and two other associates were injured while attempting to intervene. Reports suggest that Firoz attempted to mediate a settlement between the groups at the court before they departed for Badarganj.
Despite the purported mediation at the court, the conflict reignited upon the groups’ return to Badarganj. Seeking retribution for the injuries sustained earlier in the day, Mominul and his associates armed themselves with various weapons and conducted a search for Firoz and his followers. Failing to locate their rivals, Mominul’s group reportedly targeted and attacked Firoz’s residence.
In response, Firoz and his associates launched a counter-search to locate Mominul’s supporters. At approximately 4:00 pm, the situation reached a violent climax in the Baluabhata Mor area. Ariful Islam, who was operating his van near the Ambia Mor intersection at the time, was intercepted by Firoz and his group. Although Ariful was a local resident of Pathanpara, witnesses indicate he was targeted during this search for rival gang members.
Ariful was subjected to multiple, indiscriminate stabbings with sharp weapons. Local residents eventually intervened and rescued the critically injured victim, transporting him to the Badarganj Upasila Health Complex. Upon arrival, Dr Yadondro Nath, the medical officer in the emergency department, pronounced him dead.
The victim’s father, Rezaul Islam, expressed his distress over the unprovoked nature of the attack on his son. He stated:
“My son earns his living as a van driver. When he reached Ambia Mor, Murder Firoz’s group suddenly appeared and hacked him indiscriminately with sharp weapons. We demand proper justice for this act.”
The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Badarganj Police Station, Hasan Zahid Sarkar, confirmed that police units were deployed to the scene immediately upon receiving reports of the murder. The authorities have recovered the body from the health complex and have made arrangements for it to be transferred to the Rangpur Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
OC Sarkar further noted that law enforcement operations are currently underway to apprehend the remaining suspects, including the primary accused, Firoz Shah. While Jamal Hossain has been taken into custody, several others involved in the retaliatory violence remain at large.
The incident highlights a persistent security challenge in urban and semi-urban areas of Bangladesh, where rivalries between groups—often categorised as “adolescent gangs” despite some members being young adults—frequently escalate into fatal violence. In this instance, the transition of a courtroom dispute into a residential and public area assault underscores the volatility of these factions. The Badarganj municipality remains under increased police surveillance as the investigation continues into the specific affiliations of those involved and the motives behind the initial court-based dispute.
