BNP Eyes Major Changes in Key Constituencies

Bangladesh’s opposition party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has hinted at significant changes in its candidate roster ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections. Over the past three days, the party conducted intensive workshops with its potential candidates, a move seen as part of an effort to finalise nominations and refine election strategies. Notably, some previously announced candidates were not invited to participate, raising speculation that their seats may see new representatives.

Among the constituencies under consideration for change is Jhalokathi-2, where prominent figures including Israt Sultana Ilan Bhutto may be replaced. In Chattogram-4, Aslam Chowdhury was called to the workshop instead of the previously announced candidate Kazi Salauddin. Meanwhile, candidates such as Gias Uddin Qader Chowdhury of Chattogram-6 and Kazi Rawnakul Islam of Jashore-6 were not invited, suggesting possible seat reshuffles. Additionally, for two vacant constituencies, Lakshmipur-1 and Lakshmipur-4, Shahadat Hossain Selim and Ashraf Uddin Nizan have been invited and are expected to contest under the party’s “paddy sheaf” symbol.

According to BNP sources, the party has already finalised potential candidates for all four seats in Bagerhat district. These include Kapil Krishna Mondal for Bagerhat-1, Barrister Sheikh Mohammad Zakir Hossain for Bagerhat-2, Dr Sheikh Faridul Islam for Bagerhat-3, and Somnath De for Bagerhat-4. All four attended the workshops at BNP’s Gulshan office, signalling near-certainty in their nominations.

Sources close to the party confirmed that the invitations—or lack thereof—were issued on the directive of the BNP high command. Those called are almost certainly being confirmed as candidates. Meanwhile, negotiations over seats reserved for allied parties are also underway and are expected to be formally announced soon.

This workshop series follows BNP’s earlier announcements of prospective candidates: 236 seats on 3 November and 36 more on 4 December, bringing the total list to 272. Over the three-day workshops, virtual addresses by acting BNP chairman Tarique Rahman offered strategic guidance and instructions on election preparation.

The workshops also provided candidates with detailed operational instructions, including methods for managing family cards, health cards, and agricultural services, alongside strategies to engage voters through digital networks. Candidates were briefed on voter lists and constituency-specific campaigning, ensuring a coordinated approach across regions.

By actively training candidates and field agents, the BNP aims to minimise misinformation and ensure voters are well-informed about its policy proposals. This proactive strategy could play a decisive role in upcoming elections, particularly in constituencies undergoing candidate reshuffles.
