A political activist affiliated with the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has been killed by unidentified miscreants in the Chougacha upazila of Jessore district. The victim, identified as 42-year-old Atiar Rahman, was found dead with severe injuries inflicted by sharp weapons. Following the recovery of the body, law enforcement authorities apprehended a 30-year-old individual named Osman for questioning regarding his suspected involvement in the incident.
The body of the deceased was recovered by the Chougacha police on Sunday afternoon, 21 June 2026, after the Asr prayer. According to police logs, the body was found floating in a canal connected to the Bergobindapur baor (an oxbow lake), which sits at the intersection of the Chougacha Sadar, Singhajhuli, and Dhuliani union parishads.
Atiar Rahman was a resident of Laskarpur village under the Chougacha Sadar union. He was employed as a security guard at the Bergobindapur baor, and simultaneously operated an agricultural irrigation business utilizing a deep tubewell located adjacent to the water body.
According to statements provided by the victim’s younger brother, Rashed, Atiar was accustomed to returning to his family residence every morning. However, he failed to return on Sunday morning, prompting his relatives to initiate a search operation across his usual routes and workplace. At approximately 17:00 BST, the victim’s nephew, 26-year-old Hasan, discovered the body concealed beneath water hyacinths within the Bergobindapur baor canal, a channel structurally designed to manage water flow into the lake.
Upon receiving the information, a team from the Chougacha Police Station arrived at the designated coordinates to recover the body from the water channel. Following the discovery, agitated relatives of the victim intercepted and physically assaulted a suspect identified as Osman, a resident of Fatepur village and the son of Hafizur. Police officers subsequently intervened, taking Osman into operational custody to protect him from further violence and to initiate formal interrogation procedures.
The political affiliation of the victim was verified by local party leadership. M A Salam, the President of the Chougacha Upazila unit of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, confirmed that Atiar Rahman operated as an active worker for the party. Furthermore, the victim’s father, Chhabed Ali, holds an official position as an executive member of the Chougacha Sadar Union unit of the BNP.
The upazila BNP president noted that the victim and his family had been involved in a long-standing dispute with a local group regarding the control and management of the Bergobindapur baor. M A Salam stated that the rival faction had previously launched physical assaults against Atiar and his relatives, resulting in injuries and the subsequent filing of formal legal cases against the attackers. The party leader demanded the immediate arrest and rigorous prosecution of all individuals involved in organizing and executing the murder.
The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the Chougacha Police Station, Mamunur Rashid, confirmed the recovery of the body and stated that administrative preparations were underway to transport the deceased to the hospital morgue for a mandatory post-mortem examination.
Initial forensic assessments conducted by the police team at the crime scene revealed multiple severe lacerations on the victim’s body:
A deep fatal cut across the throat area.
Severe sharp weapon injuries inflicted upon the abdomen.
A distinct laceration located on the right side of the back, positioned directly below the armpit.
The jurisdictional police station has confirmed that additional personnel have been deployed to maintain order in the village, and a comprehensive investigation has been initiated to analyze the past litigation surrounding the oxbow lake to establish the motives behind the crime.
