Khairul Islam Sajib, the senior joint convener of the Narayanganj district Jubo Dal and the son of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party Member of Parliament for the Narayanganj-3 (Sonargaon–Siddhirganj) constituency, Azharul Islam Mannan, has been taken into police custody. The detention occurred on the afternoon of Sunday, 21 June 2026, following a coordinated operation in the capital city of Dhaka. Law enforcement authorities executed the action in response to a succession of formal complaints involving widespread extortion and systemic misconduct alleged against the youth front leader.
The operational apprehension was conducted in a joint effort between the Narayanganj District Police and the Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police. Investigating units located and detained Sajib at his residential property within the Bashundhara Residential Area, situated under the jurisdiction of the Bhatara area in Dhaka. Following his initial arrest in the capital, transport units transferred Sajib across district boundaries to the headquarters of the Narayanganj District Superintendent of Police, where the processing detail arrived at approximately 17:00 Bangladesh Standard Time.
The operational status of the suspect was formally corroborated by the Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) for Narayanganj, Tarek Al Mehedi. The senior administrative officer confirmed that the district department had accumulated multiple distinct allegations of extortion filed against Sajib by several separate complainants. Due to the high-profile nature of the suspect and the multi-jurisdictional scope of the investigation, the Narayanganj police service processed the detainee through preliminary local questioning before making administrative arrangements to transfer custody back to the metropolitan authorities.
Following more than an hour of initial interrogation at the Narayanganj police superintendent’s facility, higher administrative directives mandated that Sajib be escorted back to the capital. At approximately 19:00 BST, he was transferred to the central Detective Branch headquarters of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, located on Mintoo Road. Additional Commissioner and Detective Branch Chief Shafiqul Islam verified that the politician’s son was being held at the metropolitan facility for detailed interrogation. The detective chief noted that a comprehensive review of the active complaints would determine whether the evidence warranted the filing of formal criminal charges, emphasizing that the suspect would be released in accordance with standard legal procedures if the claims proved unsubstantiated.
In response to the administration’s actions, the Member of Parliament for Narayanganj-3, Azharul Islam Mannan, issued a formal statement to the media regarding the detention of his eldest son. The legislator maintained a neutral stance, stating that state law enforcement administrations possess the legal authority to take any individual into custody for the purpose of necessary official interrogation. MP Mannan explicitly clarified that he had personally facilitated the transition, ensuring that his son was handed over directly to the processing administrative authorities to assist with their ongoing inquiries.
Concurrently, the central leadership of the Jubo Dal—the youth wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party—convened an emergency administrative review following the public disclosure of the criminal complaints. A formal press release distributed by the organization’s president, Abdul Monayem Munna, and general secretary, Mohammad Nurul Islam Nayon, announced the immediate and permanent expulsion of Sajib from his organizational rank. The political body stated that the decision was implemented due to verified allegations of his direct involvement in financial irregularities and behavioral misconduct. The directive further instructed all organizational tiers to sever official ties with the former leader, explicitly noting that the political party would assume no structural responsibility for any unlawful actions committed by the individual.
