Auto-Rickshaw Drivers Assault Traffic Police in Karnaphuli

In a shocking incident in Chittagong’s Karnaphuli area, traffic police officers were assaulted by a group of auto-rickshaw drivers during a routine operation. Two officers sustained injuries in the attack, which has raised concerns over law enforcement safety in the area.

The incident occurred on Sunday, 21 December, at approximately 11:00 am in the Moijjartek locality along the Chittagong–Cox’s Bazar highway. Following the altercation, the police reportedly detained ten individuals in connection with the attack.

According to reports, two sergeants and five constables of the traffic police were conducting a regular roadside operation when they signalled a numberless CNG-operated auto-rickshaw to stop. As officers proceeded to issue a legal notice to the vehicle, a group of 10 to 15 drivers arrived at the scene and launched a sudden attack on the officers. A scuffle ensued, during which two traffic police personnel—Sergeant Imtiaz Shahriar and Constable Salauddin—suffered injuries.

Summary of the Incident:

Speaking about the incident, Sergeant Imtiaz Shahriar said:

“During a routine operation, we stopped a numberless CNG auto-rickshaw travelling the wrong way. Immediately, nearby drivers began attacking us. Legal action will be taken against those involved.”

Karnaphuli Police Sub-Inspector Akash Mahmud confirmed the ongoing investigation, stating:

“Police operations in the area continue uninterrupted, and cases have been filed against the attackers. We are committed to ensuring law enforcement can carry out their duties safely.”

Local residents have expressed alarm at the violence, highlighting a recurring issue with some auto-rickshaw drivers evading police checks and occasionally resorting to aggression. Law enforcement officials stress the need for vigilance and swift legal action to prevent such incidents in the future.

This incident has renewed calls for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and greater police presence along busy highways, particularly during peak hours, to safeguard both officers and the public.
