Indian cricket has witnessed yet another prodigious display of talent as 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi continued his meteoric rise across domestic and youth competitions. Following remarkable performances in the IPL, Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Under-19 One Dayers, and Youth Tests, Suryavanshi now etched his name into history during the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
On Wednesday in Ranchi, Bihar’s young batting sensation faced Arunachal Pradesh in the opening match of the tournament. Demonstrating extraordinary dominance, the left-handed opener unleashed a whirlwind innings, scoring a century off just 36 balls. He continued his assault to reach 150 in 59 deliveries and ultimately amassed 190 runs from 84 balls before being dismissed.
At 14 years and 272 days old, Suryavanshi became the youngest player to score a List A century in world cricket, surpassing Pakistan’s Zahoor Elahi, who had set the previous record in 1986 at 15 years and 209 days.
The innings was a masterclass in aggressive strokeplay. Suryavanshi struck 16 fours and 15 sixes, reaching his first fifty in just 25 balls with 8 fours and 2 sixes. His next fifty came in an astonishing 11 balls. His 36-ball century, comprising 10 fours and 8 sixes, ranks as the second-fastest century by an Indian and the fourth-fastest globally. The record for the fastest List A century remains with Australia’s Jake Fraser-McGurk, who achieved the feat in 29 balls.
Maintaining his relentless momentum, Suryavanshi completed 150 runs in 59 balls, hitting 14 fours and 13 sixes—a performance that established the fastest 150 in List A cricket worldwide, previously held by AB de Villiers, who scored 150 in 64 balls against West Indies in the 2015 World Cup.
Eventually, Suryavanshi was caught in the 27th over, narrowly missing the opportunity to set a record for the fastest double century in List A cricket. His innings, however, leaves an indelible mark on cricketing history and raises expectations for his future exploits.
Key Milestones of Suryavanshi’s Innings:
