Rise in Snakebite Incidents in Rajshahi: Causes and Statistics

Rajshahi, Bangladesh – Snakebite incidents in the Rajshahi region have seen a worrying increase in recent months. Local residents report that a significant number of people have fallen victim to snake attacks this year, particularly in rural and agricultural areas where people frequently work in fields, grasslands, and forested regions.

One personal account comes from farmer Hefzul Haque. Speaking at Charghat Bazar, he said, “Brother, didn’t you recognise me? I was bitten on the cheek by a Russell’s viper.” Hefzul reportedly carried the snake in a bag to the hospital, received three days of treatment, and recovered fully. He later met with Dr Abu Hena Mostofa Kamal, ICU in-charge at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where this reporter also spoke to him.

Hospital Data and Statistics

According to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital and other local treatment centres, a total of 1,490 snakebite patients were admitted in 2025. Among them, 51 fatalities were recorded. Compared with the previous year, hospital admissions rose by 117 cases, and deaths increased by 11.

Factors Behind the Increase

Experts have identified several key reasons for the surge in snakebite incidents:

Environmental Changes – Drying wetlands and hilly areas have disrupted snakes’ natural habitats, bringing them closer to human settlements.

Increased Human Activity – Expanding agriculture and encroachment near forested areas have led to more direct encounters with snakes.

Changes in Snake Populations – The number of venomous species, including Russell’s vipers, has risen, leading to more bites.

Delayed First Aid – In rural areas, delays in administering immediate care or antivenom increase the risk of fatalities.

Dr Abu Hena Mostofa Kamal warned, “Snakebite incidents can rise further if people remain unaware and fail to take precautionary measures. Every bite is dangerous, and prompt medical attention is critical.”
