A string of devastating traffic accidents across five districts in Bangladesh—Tangail, Kushtia, Narsingdi, Patuakhali, and Kurigram—claimed the lives of nine individuals on Friday. The casualties included a mother and her infant daughter, highlighting a dark day on the nation’s highways that also left at least eight others nursing various injuries.
In Tangail’s Mirzapur, a horrific collision occurred on the Dhaka-Tangail Highway around 6:30 pm. A private car, transporting passengers from North Bengal towards Dhaka, had pulled over to the side of the road in the Gorai area. A speeding truck rammed into the stationary vehicle from behind, instantly killing 32-year-old Sadia Kabir and her ten-month-old daughter, Tazri Kabir Priyam. The victims were the wife and child of Jishan Kabir Pipur from Sonagazi, Feni. Two others, including the driver, sustained injuries and are currently hospitalised.
Simultaneously in Kushtia, two young men lost their lives in the Vheramara Upazila. At approximately 6:30 pm, a freight-laden pickup van crushed a motorcycle in the Sholdag area. The deceased were identified as 20-year-olds Rashid and Siam, both residents of Mirpur Upazila. Local authorities confirmed that the bodies were handed over to their respective families following medical formalities at the Vheramara Upazila Health Complex.
Narsingdi recorded two separate fatalities. In the afternoon, an unidentified woman was struck by a bus while crossing the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway at Jailkhana Moar; she died on the spot, though the child in her arms miraculously survived with injuries. Earlier that morning, a head-on collision between a pickup and a covered van in Belabo Upazila killed the pickup driver, Rubel, and injured two assistants.
In Patuakhali’s Dumki Upazila, a collision between a passenger auto-rickshaw and a “Tomtom” (locally improvised vehicle) carrying cement resulted in the deaths of six-year-old Robiul and 60-year-old Ibrahim Khan. Two others remain in critical condition. Meanwhile, in Kurigram, poor visibility caused by dense winter fog led to a head-on crash between a “Pavel Express” bus and a motorcycle, killing a young man named Faruk Ahmed and seriously injuring his friend.
| District | Fatalities | Injuries | Key Circumstances |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tangail | 2 | 2 | Truck rammed stationary private car |
| Kushtia | 2 | 0 | Pickup van crushed motorcycle |
| Narsingdi | 2 | 3 | Bus hit pedestrian; Pickup-Van collision |

The surge in accidents has prompted local law enforcement to issue warnings regarding road safety, particularly concerning stationary vehicles on highways and the reduced visibility brought on by the seasonal fog. In almost all instances, police have seized the offending vehicles, though several drivers managed to flee the scene before arrests could be made.
