Security protocols have been significantly intensified at eight operational airports across Bangladesh, including Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital, following intelligence reports of potential militant attacks on key installations. Air Vice Marshal Monjur Kabir Bhuiyan, Chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB), confirmed these measures during an exchange of views with journalists on Monday.
The decision to bolster security follows a formal directive issued by Police Headquarters. According to Air Vice Marshal Bhuiyan, the notification prompted an immediate elevation of existing safety measures. While airports in Bangladesh are permanently designated as Key Point Installations (KPIs) and maintained under a high state of vigilance, the recent correspondence necessitated a further reinforcement of personnel and surveillance. The Chairman clarified that such adjustments are part of a standard response to evolving security assessments to ensure the safety of the state and the public.
The heightened alert follows a warning issued by Police Headquarters last Thursday. The intelligence suggested that members of a banned extremist organisation might be planning sabotage or attacks targeting prominent national structures, including the National Parliament (Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban) and various transport hubs. In response, the Ministry of Home Affairs and relevant security agencies have coordinated to prevent any breach of safety at these critical gateways.
Bangladesh currently operates eight functional airports, comprising three international and five domestic facilities. These sites are protected by a multi-layered security apparatus. This includes CAAB’s own Aviation Security (AVSEC) force, the Armed Police Battalion (APBN), and various national intelligence agencies.
The following table provides an overview of the airports currently under heightened security:
| Airport Name | Category | Location |
| Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport | International | Dhaka |
| Shah Amanat International Airport | International | Chattogram |
| Osmani International Airport | International | Sylhet |
| Cox’s Bazar Airport | Domestic | Cox’s Bazar |
| Shah Makhdum Airport | Domestic | Rajshahi |
| Jashore Airport | Domestic | Jashore |
| Saidpur Airport | Domestic | Nilphamari |
| Barishal Airport | Domestic | Barishal |
Under the new directives, passengers may encounter more rigorous screening processes. Security personnel have increased patrols within terminal buildings and along the perimeters. Access control for visitors and non-travellers has been tightened, and surveillance via closed-circuit television (CCTV) is being monitored with heightened frequency.
Despite these stringent measures, aviation authorities have stated that flight operations remain on schedule. However, passengers are advised to arrive at their respective airports earlier than usual to allow for the additional time required for comprehensive security checks and luggage scanning. The Civil Aviation Authority maintains that these proactive steps are essential to mitigate risks and ensure the continued integrity of the nation’s aviation sector.
