After a prolonged absence due to a knee injury sustained against Bayern Munich on 5 November, Paris Saint-Germain right-back Achraf Hakimi finally made his return to the pitch. His comeback could not have been more timely, as Morocco secured a commanding victory in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) last night.
In a thrilling encounter at Rabat’s vibrant Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, Morocco defeated Zambia 3-0. Olympiacos forward Ayoub El Kaabi scored twice, including a spectacular bicycle-kick goal, while Real Madrid winger Brahim Diaz contributed the other. This emphatic win ensured that Morocco, the host nation, topped Group A and advanced to the round of sixteen with seven points from two wins and one draw. Mali, finishing as group runners-up with three points from three draws, also qualified for the next stage.
El Kaabi opened the scoring in the ninth minute with a diving header from a corner delivered by Azzedine Ounahi, leaving Zambian goalkeeper Willard Muwanzer helpless. In the 27th minute, Diaz doubled the lead with a clinical strike inside the box, following a cross from Abde Ezzalzouli that El Kaabi had cleverly evaded.
The inclusion of Real Betis winger Ezzalzouli in the starting eleven added an extra dimension to Morocco’s attacking play. The 24-year-old, who spent two seasons at Barcelona, combined superbly with Diaz throughout the match. Just five minutes after the break, El Kaabi scored his second goal, once again showcasing his acrobatic talent with a backward leap to connect with Ounahi’s cross, prompting wild celebrations across Rabat.
Hakimi was introduced in the 64th minute as a substitute for Noussair Mazraoui, to a rapturous reception from the crowd. His lively performance upon entering the field brought immense relief to Morocco’s coach, Walid Regragui, who had been keenly awaiting the defender’s return.
Morocco, as Group A champions, will face one of the best third-placed teams from Groups C, D, or E in Rabat on 4 January.
Elsewhere in Group A, Mali dominated possession against Comoros but faced late pressure following Amadou Haidara’s controversial red card. Mali nonetheless progressed with five points, while Comoros, finishing third with two points, now await their fate.
In Group B, Egypt drew 0-0 with Angola but secured the top spot, ensuring Mohamed Salah’s team progresses to the knockout stage. South Africa also confirmed a round of sixteen place by defeating Zimbabwe 3-2.
