Bismillah Khan: The Maestro Who Elevated the Shehnai

The sound of the shehnai can evoke the serenity of dawn, the ache of separation, the joy of celebration and, at times, the intimacy of prayer. Few musicians transformed the instrument as profoundly as Ustad Bismillah Khan, who took the shehnai from ceremonial and folk settings and established it as a respected instrument of Hindustani classical music.

On his death anniversary, Bismillah Khan is remembered as one of the defining figures of Indian classical music. His name became inseparable from the shehnai, while his artistry gave the instrument a stature it had rarely enjoyed before.

Born on 21 March 1916 in Dumraon, Bihar, Khan came from a family of court musicians. His father, Paigambar Khan, was a shehnai player at the Dumraon royal court, while his mother was named Mitthan. He was reportedly named Kamruddin at birth, but his grandfather’s exclamation of ‘Bismillah’ became the name by which the musician would eventually be known around the world.

Music surrounded him from childhood. His move to Varanasi proved decisive in shaping his career and artistic identity. There, he came under the guidance of Ustad Ali Bux ‘Vilayatu’ Khan, a shehnai player associated with the Kashi Vishwanath Temple. Under his guru’s tutelage, Bismillah Khan undertook years of rigorous practice, developing a distinctive command of melody and rhythm.

The spiritual atmosphere of Varanasi, the banks of the Ganges and the city’s long musical traditions became closely intertwined with his artistic development. His daily practice helped him develop a style that combined technical mastery with a powerful emotional quality.

At the time, the shehnai was largely associated with weddings, religious ceremonies and other auspicious occasions. Bismillah Khan changed that perception. Through his command of ragas and his use of techniques such as meend, gamak and taan, he demonstrated that the shehnai could sustain the demands of serious classical performance.

His performance at the All India Music Conference in Calcutta in 1937 brought him significant recognition within India’s musical establishment. From there, his reputation continued to grow.

His music also became closely linked with the history of independent India. On 15 August 1947, as India marked independence, Bismillah Khan performed the shehnai at Delhi’s Red Fort. His association with Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort subsequently became part of the country’s cultural memory. His performances gave the shehnai a place within some of India’s most significant national occasions.

His influence was not confined to India. He travelled widely and performed in countries across Asia, Europe and North America, helping international audiences encounter the depth and distinct character of Indian classical music. His performances in places including Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Japan, the United States, Canada and the former Soviet Union strengthened his reputation as one of India’s foremost musical ambassadors.

The honours he received reflected the scale of his contribution. He was awarded the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan before receiving the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, in 2001. He also received honorary doctorates from institutions including Banaras Hindu University and Visva-Bharati University.

Despite his international fame, Bismillah Khan retained a notably modest way of life. Varanasi remained central to his world. Its narrow lanes, riverfront, temples and musical traditions were deeply connected with his identity. He was known for his simplicity and his ability to remain close to ordinary people despite achieving extraordinary fame.

His life also became a powerful symbol of India’s pluralistic cultural tradition. A Shia Muslim, he maintained a deep attachment to his faith while also showing profound respect for Hindu traditions. His years of musical practice at the Kashi Vishwanath Temple reflected the way music could transcend religious boundaries. For Bismillah Khan, artistic devotion did not require separation from cultural diversity.

His contribution extended beyond the concert stage. Although he did not make the film industry the centre of his career, his shehnai was heard in notable Indian films. His association with Goonj Uthi Shehnai remains particularly remembered, while his shehnai also featured in Satyajit Ray’s Jalsaghar. These appearances helped introduce his distinctive sound to wider audiences.

What distinguished Bismillah Khan was not simply his technical command of the instrument. He made the shehnai capable of conveying a wide emotional range. In his hands, it could sound celebratory and radiant one moment, contemplative and mournful the next. The instrument became a vehicle for his interpretation of Hindustani classical music rather than merely an accompaniment to ceremony.

His approach to music was rooted in discipline and devotion rather than self-promotion. Years of practice gave his performances a rare combination of precision and spontaneity. The result was a musical voice that was recognisable within a few phrases.

Bismillah Khan died on 21 August 2006 in Varanasi after suffering cardiac arrest. He was 90. He was survived by five sons and three daughters. His death marked the passing of an extraordinary musician whose career had stretched across one of the most important periods in modern Indian cultural history.

Yet his musical legacy has continued long after his death. His greatest achievement was perhaps not any single performance or award, but the transformation of the shehnai itself. He demonstrated that an instrument traditionally associated with auspicious occasions could command the same serious attention as the established instruments of classical music.

Bismillah Khan’s life remains a reminder of the ability of music to cross boundaries of religion, geography and social tradition. His shehnai carried the sounds of Varanasi and the traditions of Indian classical music to audiences far beyond India.

For generations of listeners, the shehnai will remain closely associated with his name. And whenever its plaintive, soaring sound rises through a classical performance, the musical legacy of Ustad Bismillah Khan is likely to be heard within it.

On his death anniversary, he is remembered not merely as the ‘Shehnai Maestro’, but as a pioneering classical musician whose artistry gave an entire instrument a new identity and place in Indian musical history.
