Sylhet’s ‘Mini BCB’ Launched Under Head of Cricket Model

Bangladesh cricket has taken a significant step towards decentralisation with the formal inauguration of the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) first-ever regional office outside Dhaka. The new facility, widely referred to as the ‘Mini BCB’, is set to be officially opened this afternoon in Sylhet, marking a symbolic and practical milestone in the board’s long-term vision to spread the game across the country.

While the initiative has generated considerable excitement among cricket followers, it stops short—for now—of establishing a fully autonomous regional cricket authority. Instead, the Sylhet office will initially operate under the supervision of a BCB-appointed official holding the title of ‘Head of Cricket’. This model ensures that strategic control remains with the central board, while allowing regional development to take root in a structured and supervised manner.

BCB Media Committee Chairman Amjad Hossain described the move as a cornerstone of the board president’s ambitious “Triple Century Project”, an initiative aimed at strengthening cricket at every level nationwide. Speaking to local media, Hossain explained, “Our goal is to take cricket to every corner of the country. That is simply not possible with everything operating from Dhaka alone. We plan to establish more regional offices across Bangladesh, and Sylhet is the starting point.”

Once operational, the Sylhet office will oversee cricket development across all four districts of the division—Sylhet, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, and Sunamganj—down to the upazila level. Its responsibilities will include identifying emerging talent, coordinating grassroots programmes, organising local leagues and tournaments, and seeking sponsorship opportunities to support regional competitions.

The new office will also serve as a crucial administrative bridge between local cricket organisers and the BCB’s headquarters. While day-to-day operations will be handled regionally, technical expertise, funding support, and policy guidance will continue to come from Dhaka whenever required.

Hossain emphasised that the current structure is only the beginning. “Our intention is to gradually build a self-sustaining regional framework,” he said. “In time, Sylhet will have its own selectors, dedicated coaching staff, and improved training facilities. For now, we are laying the foundation.”

Cricket analysts believe this decentralised approach could play a transformative role in tapping into Sylhet’s rich cricketing potential—a region that has already produced several national-level players despite limited infrastructure. By bringing administration closer to the grassroots, the BCB hopes to create a more efficient talent pipeline and reduce over-reliance on Dhaka-centric systems.

As the ‘Mini BCB’ begins its journey, expectations remain high. Its success could pave the way for similar offices in other regions, reshaping the governance and development of cricket in Bangladesh for years to come.
