Dear and Respected Syed Ashraful Islam

There is no doubt that the passing of Syed Ashraful Islam marked the fall of a luminous star in Bangladesh’s political firmament—an absence so profound that even the passage of a century may struggle to heal it. His departure was not merely the loss of a senior politician; it was the silencing of a rare moral voice whose presence once lent dignity, restraint and credibility to public life.

In an arena often crowded by noise, ambition and acrimony, Syed Ashraful Islam stood apart. His personality was defined by quiet firmness, his words by civility, and his conduct by an exceptional sense of courtesy and self-respect. With his death, many felt that the political stage itself grew dimmer, leaving behind an unsettling dominance of power calculations, self-interest and moral fatigue. Voices like his—clear, wise and trustworthy—have become painfully scarce.

Born on 1 January 1952, at the height of the Language Movement era, Syed Ashraful Islam was shaped by the very struggles that forged modern Bangladesh. The spirit of linguistic rights, resistance and patriotism was woven into his life from the beginning. Throughout his career, he remained deeply connected to the ideals of the Language Movement, the Liberation War of 1971 and the foundational values of independent Bangladesh. As a close associate of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, he played an important role as a Liberation War organiser and later emerged as a tested statesman of the new nation.

During his long and distinguished political career, Syed Ashraful Islam held ministerial responsibilities with diligence, integrity and discipline. Though his speeches were often sharp and uncompromising, they never descended into vulgarity or personal malice. His language was refined, logical and infused with a strong sense of dignity. At a time when political discourse increasingly rewards hostility, he exemplified a vanishing tradition—one in which opponents could be firmly challenged yet respectfully acknowledged.

On 3 January 2019, his remarkable life came to an end. Yet death has not diminished his influence. What he left behind is an enduring moral legacy: honesty in public office, decency in political conduct, unwavering patriotism and a deep sense of responsibility towards the nation. Even today, his name is spoken in political circles with reverence, often accompanied by a sigh—an acknowledgement of how rare such leadership has become.

His absence is deeply felt. The void he left is vast and irreplaceable. Bangladesh’s politics continues to search, consciously or not, for another Syed Ashraful Islam—someone who can restore grace to governance and ethics to power.

This is a tribute not only to a man, but to an ideal.

May his memory and principles remain alive in our collective conscience and in the pages of history.
