A shocking incident at a state-run medical facility in Bangladesh has sparked widespread public indignation after three outsourced employees were arrested for the alleged sexual assault of a young mother. The harrowing ordeal took place at the Natore 250-Bed General Hospital, where the victim was staying to care for her ailing toddler.
According to local authorities, the incident transpired on Sunday, 7 June, but came to light formally on Tuesday, 9 June, when the victim’s father lodged a written complaint with the Natore Sadar Police Station. Acting swiftly on the report, law enforcement officials launched an immediate operation, apprehending three suspects identified as Amit (23), Anil (24), and Prangan (23). All three individuals were employed at the hospital via an external outsourcing agency.
The victim, a resident of the Sadar Upazila district, had been residing in the hospital’s paediatric ward since 5 June to look after her two-year-old daughter, who was undergoing medical treatment. Because her husband was away on work commitments, she was the sole caregiver present at her daughter’s bedside.
On Sunday night, under the guise of providing necessary medication for the child, one of the accused lured the mother away from the ward. She was reportedly taken to an isolated stairwell on the sixth floor of the hospital building, where Amit allegedly subjected her to a sexual assault. Cruelly compounding the crime, the other two suspects, Anil and Prangan, reportedly filmed the entire assault on a mobile phone. They later used the video footage to threaten, blackmail, and silence the traumatised woman.
The crime was uncovered due to the distress of the victim’s young daughter. Left unattended for an extended period, the toddler began crying inconsolably, which alerted the on-duty nursing staff and other ward employees. Sensing that something was amiss, the hospital’s security personnel—members of the internal Ansar force—swiftly reviewed the facility’s CCTV footage. Upon tracking the victim’s movements, they located her in the sixth-floor stairwell and rescued her from the perpetrators.
The victim’s husband arrived at the hospital the following morning, where he was informed of the devastating events. Meanwhile, public anger has escalated within the community regarding the safety of vulnerable individuals inside government medical facilities.
Mansur Rahman, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Natore Sadar Police Station, confirmed the swift arrests. Speaking to the press, he stated that as soon as the formal complaint was received from the victim’s father, the police executed immediate raids to apprehend the trio.
“We have taken the suspects into custody, and stringent legal measures will be pursued against them,” the officer assured.
Investigations are ongoing as forensic teams examine the digital evidence, and hospital security protocols are heavily scrutinised.
