Bangladesh-Pakistan Strengthen Air Force Cooperation

As part of its ongoing military modernisation drive, Bangladesh has initiated discussions with Pakistan regarding the acquisition of advanced fighter aircraft. These high-level talks took place during a recent meeting of air force chiefs in Pakistan, where officials from both countries examined operational capabilities, training collaboration, and long-term defence partnerships in detail. The development was confirmed by Pakistan’s Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) and reported by local media outlets.

At the centre of these discussions is the JF-17 Thunder, a light multi-role combat jet developed jointly by China and Pakistan. The aircraft has previously seen operational deployment in conflicts involving Pakistan and India, notably during the 2019 and 2025 confrontations. Bangladesh is currently assessing the JF-17’s strategic and technical suitability to enhance its air combat capabilities.

Lieutenant Colonel Sami-ud-Daula Chowdhury, Director of the Inter-Services Public Relations in Bangladesh, stated, “A comprehensive review of the matter is underway. No final decision has yet been made.”

The high-level dialogue also covered expanded training programmes, capacity enhancement, and potential collaboration in space technology. Air Chief Marshal Zahid Ahmed Baber Sidhu of the Pakistan Air Force highlighted PAF’s recent advancements and training infrastructure to his Bangladeshi counterpart, Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmud Khan. Pakistan proposed the rapid delivery of Super Mushshak training aircraft to Bangladesh, alongside long-term technical and operational support.

The Bangladeshi delegation conducted inspections of key PAF installations to evaluate operational readiness and maintenance procedures. They also requested Pakistan’s assistance in integrating air defence radar systems and upgrading the monitoring capabilities of existing units, a proposal that was welcomed by the host nation.

The visit reflects the historical strategic partnership between Bangladesh and Pakistan, signalling a commitment to deepen collaboration in defence, technology, and space research. The discussions were oriented not only towards potential acquisitions but also toward a long-term strategic framework for bilateral military cooperation.
