In a definitive step towards the systemic reform of the national athletic landscape, the State Minister for Youth and Sports, Aminul Haque, visited the headquarters of Abahani Limited on the afternoon of Saturday, 25 April 2026. This visit arrives shortly after his inspection of Mohammedan Sporting Club, marking a concentrated effort to engage with the nation’s most venerable sporting institutions. A former professional footballer himself, the Minister utilised the occasion to reiterate his administration’s resolve to eliminate political influence and partisan agendas from the sporting arena.
Addressing an audience comprised of club directors, athletes, and prominent organisers, Minister Haque reflected on the historical significance of the Abahani-Mohammedan rivalry. He described this competition as a cornerstone of Bangladeshi footballing heritage that has endured since the country’s independence. However, he lamented the institutional decay of the preceding seventeen years, during which he alleged that these sporting entities were frequently exploited for political leverage.
The Minister made it clear that the current government is determined to deviate from these historical patterns. He outlined a vision where clubs are granted the autonomy to conduct their affairs without external interference. By advocating for a comprehensive restructuring of Abahani’s management, Haque expressed confidence that the club would soon reclaim its standing as a premier competitor in both cricket and football, as well as other athletic disciplines.
Aminul Haque further expounded on the role of sport as a vital instrument for social health. He highlighted the necessity of physical activity in shielding the younger generation from moral attrition and the pervasive nature of digital device addiction. According to the Minister, competitive sport remains the most potent antidote to the sedentary and often isolating influences of the modern age.
In an unprecedented display of camaraderie, the Minister was accompanied on his tour of Abahani by high-ranking officials from Mohammedan Sporting Club. This gesture of unity was highly praised by the Minister, who remarked:
“Whilst we encourage fierce and uncompromising competition on the field, it is of paramount importance that off the field, organisers and players across all clubs maintain relationships defined by cordiality and mutual respect.”
The Minister provided detailed insights into the government’s fiscal strategy to support the professionalisation of sport. He noted that the financial viability of individual athletes is inextricably linked to the operational stability of their clubs. To this end, the Ministry is committed to fostering a sustainable ecosystem that provides long-term security for sportspeople.
Significant updates were shared regarding the Sports Allowance programme, a central pillar of this financial strategy:
Current Allocation: A total of 300 athletes are presently enrolled in the allowance scheme.
Fiscal Expansion: The government has formalised an objective to expand this coverage to 500 athletes within the next fiscal year.
The strategic importance of the visit was underscored by the presence of an influential delegation from the Bangladeshi sporting and corporate sectors. Amongst those accompanying the State Minister were:
Tamim Iqbal, the President of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).
Anjan Chowdhury Pintu, Chairman of the Square Group.
Sheikh Bashir Ahmed Mamun, former Vice-President of the Bangladesh Olympic Association (BOA).
Lokman Hossain Bhuiyan, Director-in-Charge of Mohammedan Sporting Club.
Fahim Sinha and Rafiqul Islam Babu, members of the BCB Ad-hoc Committee.
The convergence of these leaders signals a coordinated institutional effort to professionalise the administration of sports in Bangladesh. By seeking to insulate club management from political cycles, the Ministry aims to ensure that the 2026 season serves as a turning point for the nation’s sporting integrity and international competitiveness.
