Health authorities have confirmed that the Nipah virus has now been detected in 35 districts across Bangladesh, prompting a nationwide alert and directives for hospitals to remain on high alert. The virus, known for its high fatality rate, has claimed four lives in 2025, all of whom were confirmed to have been infected. The most recent death occurred at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where the patient was receiving treatment.
According to the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR), five deaths were reported in 2024 due to Nipah virus infection, with all five patients having contracted the virus.
On Wednesday, 7 January, the IEDCR convened a meeting titled “Discussion on the Spread and Risk of Nipah Virus” at its auditorium. The session was chaired by IEDCR Director Tahmina Shirin.
During the meeting, IEDCR scientific officer Sharmin Sultana highlighted the recurring pattern of Nipah outbreaks during the winter months in Bangladesh. “The virus is highly virulent, with nearly 72% of infected patients succumbing to the disease,” she said. She added that transmission commonly occurs through consumption of raw date palm sap, while approximately 28% of cases result from human-to-human transmission.
Sharmin Sultana further stressed the absence of any effective antiviral treatment or vaccine, which complicates containment efforts.
Dr Syed Moinuddin Sattar, IEDCR associate scientist and Nipah virus survey coordinator, stated that out of 64 districts in Bangladesh, infections have so far been reported in 35. Among these, Faridpur, Rajbari, Naogaon, and Lalmonirhat have experienced comparatively higher infection and mortality rates. Hospitals in these high-risk districts have been instructed to maintain readiness and enhance surveillance.
The meeting also emphasised the critical role of public awareness in preventing the spread of Nipah virus. Authorities urged the media to support campaigns discouraging the consumption of raw date palm sap and promoting proper hygiene practices.
Health Advisory to Prevent Nipah Virus Infection
| Preventive Measure | Guidance |
|---|---|

Present at the meeting was also Nazmul Hossain, Director General of the Directorate General of Health Education. Officials reiterated that proactive public education, vigilant hospital preparedness, and adherence to hygiene protocols are essential to curbing the spread of this deadly virus.
