Bangladesh’s football scene has witnessed a notably positive year in 2025, with the national team performing well internationally and grassroots participation steadily rising. However, the domestic football landscape tells a different story. Despite the overall optimism surrounding the sport, financial constraints and the lack of corporate sponsorship have led to disappointing developments within the country’s domestic competitions.
The Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) recently announced that one of its major domestic tournaments, the Super Cup, will not take place this season. The primary reason is the inability to secure sufficient sponsorship, a matter confirmed by BFF senior vice-president and Professional League Committee chairman, Imrul Hasan.
At the start of the season, BFF had outlined plans to organise five domestic tournaments, including the Bangladesh 2.0 Challenge Cup, the Federation Cup, the Bangladesh Football League, and the Super Cup. While three of these tournaments—Bangladesh 2.0 Challenge Cup, Federation Cup, and the Bangladesh Football League—have successfully been held or are ongoing, the Super Cup, originally intended to take place during the mid-season transfer window, has been cancelled due to financial shortfalls.
Imrul Hasan explained, “At first, a telecommunications company had agreed to sponsor the Super Cup. Unfortunately, they withdrew their support at the last minute. Without a title sponsor, it is impossible for us to stage the tournament this year. We now have no option but to postpone it until the next season.”
Historically, the Super Cup has been a flagship domestic tournament, held in 2009, 2011, and 2013, and has served as a prestigious competition that brought together the top clubs of Bangladesh, generating both competitive excitement and media attention. Its cancellation this season is therefore a significant setback for clubs, players, and fans alike.
| Tournament Name | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Bangladesh 2.0 Challenge Cup | Completed | Successfully concluded with competitive matches |
| Federation Cup | Completed | Important for national team player selection |
| Bangladesh Football League | Ongoing/Completed | Season underway, strong participation |
| Super Cup | Cancelled | Lack of sponsorship prevented organisation |
| Fifth Tournament (TBD) | Not yet announced | Details to be confirmed later |
The cancellation of the Super Cup highlights a persistent challenge for Bangladeshi football: securing reliable corporate sponsorship to sustain domestic competitions. Experts emphasise the need for BFF to actively engage with the private sector and international partners to ensure financial stability for future tournaments.
Fans and stakeholders remain hopeful that the Super Cup will return in the next season, restoring one of the nation’s most prestigious football events and supporting the continued growth of domestic football in Bangladesh.
