BPL-returning players brought success to Pakistan

Pakistani cricketers who made a dazzling impression in the first phase of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) have once again delivered on the international stage. Despite having to leave the BPL midway due to national duties, these players played a pivotal role as Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka by a convincing six wickets in the opening match of their T20 series.

With less than a month remaining until the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup, this series serves as an important preparatory exercise for both sides. Pakistan’s chase of 129 runs was clinical—they reached the target with 20 balls to spare and six wickets in hand, establishing early confidence ahead of the global tournament.

The foundation of Pakistan’s victory was laid in the powerplay, with openers Sahibzada Farhan and Syed Saim Ayub providing a brisk start. Both players had previously impressed in the BPL—Farhan representing Rajshahi and Saim shining for Sylhet. On this occasion, Saim scored 24 runs off just 18 balls, featuring three boundaries and a six, before being dismissed. Farhan, meanwhile, played a commanding innings of 51 from 36 deliveries, hitting four fours and two sixes.

Earlier, Pakistan’s bowlers had applied relentless pressure on the Sri Lankan batting line-up, dismissing them for 128 runs in 19.2 overs. Opener Kamil Mishra fell without scoring, trapped by Salman Mirza, who played for Dhaka Capitals in the BPL. Pathum Nishanka made 12 from 12 balls before falling to Wasim. Middle-order resistance came from Janith Liyanage, who scored 40 off 31 balls, supported briefly by Wanindu Hasaranga (18) and captain Dasun Shanaka (12).

Salman Mirza and Abrar Ahmed shared the spoils, claiming three wickets each, while Shadab Khan contributed with two wickets in his first match back. Winning the toss, Pakistan elected to bowl first, aiming to replicate game conditions similar to those expected in the World Cup.

This three-match T20 series provides both sides with a crucial opportunity to fine-tune their strategies ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup, which begins on 7 February. Pakistan will kick off the tournament against the Netherlands, with all group and Super Eight matches, as well as any semifinal or final appearances, scheduled to take place in Sri Lanka.

Match Summary:

Team Score Overs Top Scorer Notable Bowler Wickets
Sri Lanka 128 all out 19.2 Janith Liyanage 40 Salman Mirza 3/28 10
Pakistan 129/4 18.2 Sahibzada Farhan 51

This result not only showcased the BPL stars’ ability to carry their form into international cricket but also provided Pakistan with a morale-boosting start to their World Cup preparations.
