Salahuddin Ahmed Clarifies BNP`s Position on Rebel Candidates

As Bangladesh approaches the 13th national parliamentary elections, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has outlined its structured approach toward dealing with discontented or rebel candidates within the party. Speaking to journalists on Thursday at the BNP political office in Gulshan, Dhaka, senior BNP standing committee member Salahuddin Ahmed emphasised that all decisions regarding such candidates are taken through a formal organisational process.

Salahuddin stated, “To maintain internal discipline while safeguarding broader political objectives, we are combining firmness with dialogue. Both are essential for navigating this crucial period.”

He further explained, “Being one of the country’s largest political parties, BNP always receives more candidate applications than it can accommodate. Naturally, not every aspirant secures the desired nomination, and disappointment is inevitable. However, the party must sometimes make difficult decisions to serve its interests, promote democratic participation, and ensure multi-party representation in parliament.”

On the issue of rebel candidates, Salahuddin detailed the measures BNP has implemented: “Formal organisational steps have been taken. Many candidates have been approached to understand and accept party decisions. In some cases, discipline has been enforced, while in others, dialogue has successfully stabilised the situation. We are confident that these challenges will be resolved shortly.”

Regarding Tarique Rahman’s recent northern tour, Salahuddin noted, “Visiting martyrs’ graves and laying wreaths does not violate the electoral code of conduct. On the contrary, such actions inspire national consciousness. The sacrifices of the 2024 movement’s martyrs must never be undervalued.”

The BNP has outlined its main organisational measures for addressing rebel candidates in the table below:

Measure Purpose Expected Outcome
Call for dialogue Resolve misunderstandings Maintain party unity
Issue warnings Uphold discipline Reduce rebellion
Implement organisational steps Prevent rule violations Enforce party decisions
Pursue reconciliation efforts Stabilise political environment Maintain calm electoral atmosphere

Salahuddin’s remarks make it clear that the BNP’s approach toward rebel candidates is guided not by emotion but by a strategic, responsible political methodology. Maintaining party cohesion and protecting democratic values remain the party’s primary objectives ahead of the upcoming elections.
