Real Madrid booked their place in the Spanish Super Cup final after defeating Atlético Madrid 2–1 in a thrilling semi-final on Thursday night at King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Under the tactical guidance of coach Xavi Alonso, Los Blancos imposed themselves from the very first whistle, demonstrating clinical efficiency and composure.
The scoring opened almost immediately. In the opening minutes, a foul on Jude Bellingham earned Real a free-kick, which Federico Valverde brilliantly converted from approximately 25 yards. The Uruguayan midfielder’s powerful strike flew past Atlético’s defence and goalkeeper, giving Real an early advantage.
Following the early setback, Atlético Madrid intensified their attacking play. Despite creating numerous opportunities through players like Alex Berenguer and Alexander Sørloth, Atlético were repeatedly denied by the outstanding form of Real’s goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. The Belgian international made several crucial saves to keep his side ahead.
Real doubled their lead in the 55th minute. Valverde provided a precise pass to Rodrigo, who ran into the box down the right and struck a perfectly placed finish, sending the ball into the net. Atlético responded quickly, reducing the deficit three minutes later as Sørloth converted a cross from Julian Simeone with a towering header. Despite further pressure, Diego Simeone’s side could not find an equaliser.
In the closing stages, Alonso made a tactical substitution, bringing on Arda Güler for Vinícius Júnior, prolonging the Brazilian forward’s goal drought to 16 consecutive matches. The late substitution also sparked a moment of tension near the dugout, resulting in a yellow card for Atlético’s coach Simeone.

Despite Kylian Mbappé missing the match through injury, Real Madrid secured back-to-back victories in their opening two fixtures of the new year. The win also offered some measure of revenge for their heavy 5–2 La Liga defeat to Atlético last September.
The stage is now set for a historic showdown as Real Madrid face their arch-rivals and current champions, Barcelona, in the Super Cup final on Sunday at the same venue. Having earlier dispatched Athletic Bilbao 5–0 in the other semi-final, Barcelona and Real Madrid will meet for the fourth consecutive time in the competition’s final, renewing one of football’s most iconic rivalries: El Clásico.
