Real Madrid’s first opportunity for silverware under new coach Xabi Alonso ended in disappointment as Los Blancos fell 3-2 to arch-rivals Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup, held last night in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Despite having claimed victory in the season’s first El Clásico in La Liga, Alonso’s side were unable to capitalise on this high-profile stage, losing to their Catalan adversaries.
However, Alonso remained unfazed by the defeat, describing the Super Cup as “the least important match of the season” and urging his squad to focus on improvement rather than dwelling on the loss. “We need to turn the page as quickly as possible. It is only a single match, a single competition, and among all the matches ahead, this is the least significant. Our priority is to look forward, restore the players, and boost morale,” the Spanish coach emphasised.
The match saw Barcelona take the lead through Raphinha, but Real swiftly equalised thanks to a brilliant strike from Vinícius Júnior. The Brazilian winger continued to be the focal point of Madrid’s attack, testing Barcelona’s defence repeatedly until he was substituted late in the game, reportedly due to fatigue in the humid conditions. Alonso praised his performance: “Vinícius played exceptionally until the 85th minute. He changed the pace of the game, scored a brilliant goal, and posed a constant threat. The result is disappointing, but we can take positives for the season.”
Real created several scoring opportunities, particularly in the final 15 minutes. Alonso highlighted the team’s resilience: “The squad showed great determination throughout. At half-time, we were level at 2-2, and the second half was intensely competitive. Unfortunately, Barcelona found a goal where there seemed to be no clear chance, and despite our efforts, we could not equalise again.”
While the Super Cup defeat adds to the scrutiny on Alonso, who has faced criticism since taking charge mid-season, Real remain four points behind Barcelona in La Liga. The focus now is firmly on recovering key players and preparing for the challenges ahead.
Key Match Summary:
| Competition | Venue | Result | Goal Scorers (Real) | Goal Scorers (Barcelona) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Spanish Super Cup | Jeddah, Saudi Arabia | Real Madrid 2–3 Barcelona | Vinícius Júnior, Gonzalo | Raphinha, 2 others |
Alonso’s message was clear: setbacks are temporary, growth is essential, and the team must focus on the long-term campaign rather than a single trophy.
