Rice imports resume at Hili port after 1 month 22 days

After a prolonged halt of one month and 22 days, rice imports from India have recommenced at the Hili Land Port in Dinajpur. The resumption comes following government approval to import rice in order to stabilise domestic market prices.

On Wednesday afternoon, two Indian trucks operated by M/s DP Enterprise delivered a total of 77 tonnes of rice to the Hili port. Revenue Officer of Hili Customs, Mr MR Bandhan, confirmed that rice imports had been suspended at this port since 30 November, marking nearly seven weeks of interruption. Importers have now resumed duty-free rice imports, adhering to all formalities laid down by customs authorities. The decision aims to meet domestic demand and maintain price stability in the national rice market.

Speaking on the operational scale of imports, Yusuf Ali, Deputy Assistant Officer of the Plant Quarantine Centre at Hili Land Port, stated that a total of 32 importers have been authorised to bring in 14,000 tonnes of rice through this port. Although import permissions were granted three days ago, actual shipments officially began on Wednesday. Authorities express optimism that the recommencement of imports will help stabilise rice prices in the country.
