In a solemn tribute to the martyrs of Bangladesh’s Liberation War, Monisha Chakraborty, the Bangladesh Socialist Party (BASAD) nominee and candidate supported by the Democratic United Front for the Barisal-5 (Sadar–City Corporation) constituency, officially launched her election campaign on Thursday at Barisal Central Shaheed Minar. The event marked the formal commencement of her political outreach ahead of the upcoming national parliamentary polls.
Addressing the gathering, Chakraborty criticised the current state of parliament, stating, “Those who have transformed the legislature into a club for millionaires, alienating it from the people, and turning it into a stronghold for corrupt, looting, money-laundering, and defaulting politicians, must be challenged. We aim to make parliament a centre for public rights once again. After years of struggle on the streets, we are now entering the electoral battle.”
She further emphasised the unity of BASAD and the Democratic United Front, expressing her hope that voters in Barisal-5 would favour change, and that the “Moy” (plough) symbol would reflect their mandate. “Let us reject decayed and conventional politics. By standing against corrupt and exploitative leaders, we can usher in a new era. Barisal-5 will be the starting point of this transformative journey,” she added.
The event was attended by prominent leftist leaders and freedom fighters, including:
| Position | Name | Party / Organisation |
|---|---|---|
| Central Leader & Freedom Fighter | Abdur Sattar | Revolutionary Communist League / Democratic United Front |
| Central Member | Professor Jalilur Rahman | Democratic United Front |
| Barisal District President | Mizanur Rahman | Communist Party of Bangladesh |
| Central Committee Extended Forum Member | Imam Hossain | BASAD |
| Barisal District Member | Shahidul Sheikh | BASAD |
| District Leaders | Shahidul Howlader & others | Democratic United Front |
Following the tribute, leaders of the Democratic United Front highlighted that the people of Bangladesh fought the Liberation War to establish a society free of inequality—an aspiration that remains unfulfilled after 54 years of governance by successive powers, which they claim have imposed a reign of exploitation on ordinary citizens. They identified Monisha Chakraborty, running under the Moy symbol, as one of the most capable candidates to represent Barisal-5.
After the formal gathering, Chakraborty and the leaders of the leftist front conducted door-to-door canvassing and public outreach along Sadar Road, Church Mohalla, Chawk Bazar, and Fazlul Haque Avenue. Leaflets soliciting votes on her behalf were distributed by Democratic United Front activists, as the campaign moved to connect directly with voters and highlight her vision for political and social reform in Barisal.
Chakraborty’s campaign launch combines the respect for national history with a clear message of political change, signalling a grassroots-driven effort to challenge entrenched political interests in the constituency.
