Bangladesh Cricket Board Overhauls Central Contract System

Ahead of the 2026 international cricket season, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has announced a major reform of the central contract structure for the national men’s team. In a strategic move aimed at modernising player management, the board has decided to abolish the highest ‘A Plus’ category.

According to BCB sources, the rationale behind this decision is rooted in the current realities of international cricket: no player consistently participates in all three formats—Test, One-Day International (ODI), and Twenty20 (T20). The change is therefore not merely a financial adjustment, but a strategic alignment with modern cricketing practices, where workload management and format-specific expertise have become crucial.

The BCB’s Cricket Operations Committee has already drafted the 2026 central contract list, proposing 27 players under the new structure. While the final approval of the list and salary allocations is pending, it is certain that the A Plus category will no longer exist.

This marks the latest step in the board’s evolving approach to contracts. In 2025, the BCB had overhauled the system from format-specific grades to a five-tier structure: A Plus, A, B, C, and D. The A Plus tier was previously reserved for senior players regularly featuring in all formats. However, as no player now meets this criterion, the board has opted for a more realistic and sustainable framework.

A senior BCB official commented, “A Plus is not being removed as a punitive measure; it is a pragmatic adjustment. Modern cricket necessitates format-based specialisation and workload management, resulting in fewer players participating regularly across all formats.”

The 2026 central contract list also reflects generational changes. Long-serving all-rounder Mahmudullah has retired from international cricket and is absent from the new roster. Nonetheless, 21 players from the previous year retain contracts, ensuring continuity, while six newcomers have been added: Shammim Hossain Patuari, Parvez Hossain Emon, all-rounder Saif Hasan, off-spinner Naeem Hasan, left-arm spinner Tanvir Islam, and pacer Hasan Murad. Established players such as captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, Liton Kumar Das, Taskin Ahmed, Mehedi Hasan Miraz, Mushfiqur Rahim, and Mominul Haque remain core members, maintaining a balance between experience and youth.

Proposed Central Contract Summary (2026)

Aspect Details
Total Players 27
A Plus Category Abolished
Contract Levels A, B, C, D
New Inclusions 6
Retained from Previous Year 21
Notable Exit Mahmudullah (Retired)

Once finalised, the revised contract system is expected to influence team selection, rotation policies, and player workload management. It also sends a clear signal that Bangladesh cricket is prioritising format-specific skill and performance over blanket participation in all formats, aligning with the demands of contemporary international cricket.
