Novak Djokovic’s quest for a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title came to an end at the 2026 Australian Open, as the Serbian maestro was defeated by 22-year-old Carlos Alcaraz in a historic final. Djokovic, widely regarded as the greatest male tennis player of all time, was aiming to surpass Margaret Court’s overall Grand Slam record but fell short.
Alcaraz triumphed with a 2–6, 6–2, 6–3, 7–5 victory, completing his career Grand Slam and setting a new record as the youngest male player to do so, surpassing the previous benchmark set by his compatriot Rafael Nadal. With this victory, Alcaraz claimed his seventh Grand Slam title, having previously won the US Open, Wimbledon, and the French Open twice each.
Both players had battled through epic semi-finals to reach the final, but the championship clash failed to follow expectations for many fans, with both stars holding their serves through most of the match. Despite a few break point opportunities, neither could dominate early on.
The match began in Djokovic’s favour. The 38-year-old Serbian quickly took the first set 6–2 in just 33 minutes, demonstrating his signature precision and experience. However, Alcaraz responded decisively in the second set, leveling the match with a 6–2 win in 36 minutes.
The third set, ending 6–3 in Alcaraz’s favour, was much more tightly contested. The 51-minute set saw Alcaraz fight for every point, saving multiple crucial situations, including four break points in the final game. The fourth and final set proved to be the longest and most gruelling. It lasted one hour and two minutes, with the decisive break finally coming in the 12th game. Alcaraz secured the set 7–5, claiming the Norman Brooks Challenge Cup and lifting the championship trophy at Rod Laver Arena for the first time.
Djokovic, a ten-time Australian Open champion, was denied the opportunity to extend his record and also missed out on breaking the record for the oldest male Grand Slam winner, leaving the historic milestones temporarily intact.
A summary of Alcaraz’s Grand Slam achievements and key stats is provided below:
| Player | Age | Total Grand Slam Titles | Career Grand Slam Completion | Previous Wins |
