Bangladesh maintained their flawless start to the SAFF Under-19 Women’s Championship with a composed 2–0 victory over India at Pokhara Rangashala Stadium in Nepal, extending their winning run to two matches and tightening their grip on the summit of the group table. Coming days after a record-breaking demolition of Bhutan, the result underlined the growing maturity and tactical clarity of Peter Butler’s side, who combined defensive resilience with incisive counter-attacking to subdue one of the tournament’s traditional heavyweights.
The contest began with India asserting early territorial pressure, pinning Bangladesh deep during the opening quarter-hour. Yet the Bangladeshi back line held firm, absorbing pressure and gradually wresting control of the tempo. Butler’s team were notably patient in possession, inviting India forward before springing swift transitions down the flanks. The approach yielded rewards on 29 minutes. From a cleverly delivered free-kick by Mamni Chakma, the Indian goalkeeper Munni failed to secure the ball under pressure. Arpita Biswas, alert on the goal line, reacted first and guided a simple finish into the net to give Bangladesh a deserved lead.
Momentum swung decisively before the interval. In the 40th minute, Trishna Rani surged down the right wing and delivered a teasing low cross into the penalty area. Alpi Akter timed her run perfectly and converted with precision, doubling the advantage and sending Bangladesh into the break with a commanding 2–0 cushion.
If the goals were the highlights, the foundation of the victory was laid by goalkeeper Iyarzan Begum, who produced a pair of outstanding saves within five minutes of each other in the first half. She leapt athletically to claw away a direct free-kick and then smothered a long-range effort from Pritika Barma, preserving Bangladesh’s clean sheet at a pivotal stage. In the second half, India pressed with greater urgency, but Bangladesh’s compact defensive block, disciplined full-back cover and intelligent screening from midfield thwarted repeated advances. When opportunities arose to break, Bangladesh managed the game astutely, prioritising control over reckless expansion.
The win leaves Bangladesh on six points from two matches, clear at the top of the standings, while India sit second on three points from the same number of games. Earlier in the tournament, Bangladesh opened with a stunning 12–0 rout of Bhutan, featuring four goals from Munkhi Akter and hat-tricks by Alpi Akter and Trishna Rani. India, by contrast, began with a victory over hosts Nepal but were unable to replicate that form against a more cohesive Bangladeshi unit. Bangladesh will next face Nepal on Wednesday, a fixture that could effectively secure their place in the final.
Both Bangladesh and India are the reigning joint champions of the SAFF Under-19 Women’s Championship, having shared the title in 2024. With Pakistan, Sri Lanka and the Maldives not participating this year, the competition is being contested in a four-team round-robin format, with the top two progressing to the final on 7 February. On current form, Bangladesh appear well placed not only to reach the final but to do so with confidence and momentum.
