Bangladeshi Cargo Ship Sinks Near Phuket

A Panama-flagged cargo vessel bound for Chattogram, Bangladesh, has sunk off the coast of Thailand, authorities confirmed. The incident occurred on Saturday, 7 February, at approximately 3:30 pm local time in deep waters near Phuket.

The vessel, named MV Siloed Ark, measured 115 metres in length and was carrying 297 containers belonging to Bangladeshi importers. It had departed from Port Klang, Malaysia, on 5 February, making the voyage to Chattogram a mere two days old when the disaster struck.

According to Md. Mukul Hossain, manager of Alvi Lines Bangladesh, the local agent for the ship, the vessel suddenly listed while approximately four nautical miles off Phuket’s coast and sank within minutes. Given the severity of the situation, the ship’s captain declared the vessel abandoned.

Emergency response was swift. A nearby fishing boat and the Thai Navy’s rescue teams promptly launched operations, successfully rescuing all 16 crew members. The sailors have been accommodated at a hotel in Phuket and are undergoing health checks.

The key details of the incident are summarised in the table below:

Thai authorities, in collaboration with Bangladeshi agents, have launched investigations to determine the cause of the accident, assess the value of the cargo, and evaluate potential environmental impacts. Preliminary analyses by maritime safety experts suggest that sudden adverse weather conditions, navigational errors, or mechanical failures are often responsible for such maritime incidents.

Maritime specialists warn that this accident serves as a cautionary signal for commercial shipping routes across Southeast Asia. It underscores the importance of proactive safety measures to protect both crew members and cargo. Regional shipping operators are being advised to review navigational protocols, ensure regular maintenance, and monitor weather systems closely to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The MV Siloed Ark disaster highlights the vulnerabilities of the busy sea lanes connecting Malaysia, Thailand, and Bangladesh, which remain crucial for trade but are susceptible to unpredictable maritime hazards.
