In a significant pre-election development, 153 officers of the Bangladesh Police have been promoted from the rank of Sub-Inspector (SI) to Inspector. The promotions were formalised on Sunday through three separate notifications signed by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam, although the announcements were made public only today.
According to the official notifications, the promotions are divided among different branches and categories of police service. Of the total, 100 officers were elevated from Sub-Inspector of Police (Unarmed) to Inspector of Police (Unarmed), while 47 officers were promoted from Sub-Inspector of Police (Armed) to Inspector of Police (Armed). Additionally, six officers holding the rank of Police Sergeant were promoted to Inspector of Police with responsibilities in urban policing and traffic management.
This wave of promotions comes just ahead of the 13th National Parliamentary Elections and the accompanying referendum, scheduled to be held on 12 February. The move has been seen as a procedural step to strengthen the administrative hierarchy within the force ahead of a major national event.
The detailed breakdown of promotions is as follows:
| Previous Rank | New Rank | Number of Officers |
|---|---|---|
| Sub-Inspector of Police (Unarmed) | Inspector of Police (Unarmed) | 100 |
| Sub-Inspector of Police (Armed) | Inspector of Police (Armed) | 47 |
| Police Sergeant (Urban & Traffic) | Inspector of Police (City & Traffic) | 6 |
| Total | 153 |
The Bangladesh Police, tasked with ensuring law and order across the country, particularly during election periods, will now have these officers in senior operational roles. The promotions are expected to facilitate smoother management of security operations, both in urban centres and rural areas, during the election.
IGP Baharul Alam, in his notification, emphasised that these promotions were made in accordance with service regulations and merit considerations, highlighting the commitment of the force to maintain professionalism and operational readiness.
With the elections just days away, these promotions mark a notable adjustment within the police force, ensuring that experienced and capable officers occupy key positions to oversee law enforcement activities across the country.
