The police recovered the bodies of three unidentified men from different pavements in the capital’s Shahbagh area on Sunday, 12 July 2026. The discoveries, made within a short distance of one another, prompted immediate responses from law enforcement and medical personnel. Local pedestrians first noticed the unconscious individuals and alerted the authorities, sparking concerns among commuters in the busy institutional district.
According to eyewitnesses and local shopkeepers, the bodies were found in three distinct locations: near the Anandabazar road, adjacent to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital exterior, and on the pavement in front of Dhaka University’s Amar Ekushey Hall. Given the high volume of daily foot traffic in these locations, the sight of motionless individuals eventually raised suspicions among passers-by, who subsequently called the police.
Detailing the timeline of the recoveries, police officials stated that the first body was found near the perimeter of Dhaka Medical College Hospital at around 9:30 am. Later, at around 11:00 am, separate police teams dispatched to Anandabazar and the Amar Ekushey Hall pavement found two more unresponsive men. All three were rushed to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where the attending doctors pronounced them dead on arrival. Preliminary assessments indicate that one of the deceased was approximately 60 years old, while another was around 55. The third individual appeared to be of a similar age demographic.
Inspector Md Faruk, the officer-in-charge of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital police camp, commented on the initial findings. He observed that none of the bodies bore visible marks of physical violence or trauma, leading investigators to suspect that severe health complications, potentially exacerbated by rough sleeping conditions, caused the fatalities.
Md Moniruzzaman, the Officer-in-Charge of Shahbagh Police Station, confirmed that no identification documents, wallets, or personal effects were recovered from the deceased. Local inquiries suggest that the men were vagrants who frequently sought shelter on the streets of Shahbagh. The bodies have been transferred to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for post-mortem examinations to establish the exact causes of death. Meanwhile, the police are using biometric verification techniques, including fingerprint scanning, in an attempt to identify the men and contact any surviving relatives.
