Attempted Electoral Fraud and Photography at Kalapara Polls

Police in Kalapara Upazila, Patuakhali, have detained three individuals in separate incidents involving attempted electoral fraud and unauthorised photography at polling stations, raising concerns over election integrity in the region.

The incidents occurred on Thursday, 12 February, during the early hours of polling. At around 9:30 a.m., two men were apprehended at the Khepupura Nesaruddin Kamil Madrasa polling centre in Kalapara town for attempting to submit fraudulent votes. The individuals have been identified as 16-year-old Towhid Islam and his associate Sohag Sikder, aged 46.

Simultaneously, at the Islampur Dakhil Madrasa polling station in Kuakata municipality, a separate case emerged when police detained 46-year-old Belal Hossain for taking photographs within the restricted area of the polling centre. The taking of images inside voting booths is strictly prohibited under election law to prevent undue influence and protect voter confidentiality.

All three detainees are currently in police custody. Authorities have confirmed that appropriate legal proceedings will follow under the supervision of a judicial magistrate.

Kalapara Upazila Executive Officer and Assistant Returning Officer, Kausar Hamid, stated, “Legal action will be taken against the individuals in accordance with judicial orders. We are maintaining the highest level of vigilance to ensure the transparency and security of the electoral process.”
