In Barisal district, only 15–20 per cent of voters cast their ballots in three hours

Barisal, 12 February 2026 — In the first three hours of voting across Barisal’s six parliamentary constituencies, turnout ranged between 15 and 20 per cent, according to official figures. Barisal District Commissioner and Returning Officer Mohammad Khairul Alam Sumon confirmed that polling proceeded smoothly in a peaceful environment.

Despite the generally calm atmosphere, the electoral scene revealed uneven participation from party representatives. In Barisal-5 constituency, where seven candidates are contesting, polling agents were primarily present for candidates representing the Rice Sheaf and Hand Fan symbols. Observers noted the absence of agents from other candidates in most centres.

Prominent candidates were seen casting their votes early in the morning. At approximately 8:00 am, Mufti Syed Muhammad Faizul Karim of the Islamic Movement voted at Rupatali Government Secondary School, while Dr. Monisha Chakraborty, representing BASAD, cast her ballot at SCGM School on Bogura Road.

During a visit to Ashwini Kumar Hall on Sadar Road, Barisal Metropolitan Deputy Police Commissioner Sushanta Sarkar assured that there was no opportunity for untoward incidents. “If any reports are received, the police respond immediately. Measures have been in place since the election schedule was announced to maintain a secure environment,” he said.

Early morning observations revealed moderate voter engagement. Around 7:30 am, at the Chaitanya School polling centre in the Barisal City Corporation area, several women voters arrived, although there were no long queues or crowding. Many expressed satisfaction after voting, though some noted the absence of a more festive atmosphere.

Meanwhile, at Barisal Government Girls’ School polling centre at 9:00 am, the scene was quiet and subdued. Out of 2,736 registered voters, only around 200 had voted within the first two hours. Presiding officer Redwan remarked that male and female voter participation was nearly equal.

Overall, polling centres across Barisal remained peaceful and orderly during the morning session. Authorities continue to monitor the process closely to ensure security and fairness throughout the day.
