Fearless Journalism to Be Fostered: Minister Zahir Uddin

Bangladesh’s newly appointed Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Zahir Uddin Swapon, has pledged to create an environment that promotes fearless and independent journalism across the country.

Swapon assumed office following the swearing-in of a 50-member cabinet led by Tarique Rahman, chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), yesterday afternoon. The cabinet, which reflects a blend of seasoned politicians and new entrants, took its oath at a formal ceremony on Tuesday. Swapon officially joined the secretariat on Wednesday at approximately 1:15 pm, where he engaged with journalists and outlined his vision for the ministry.

Reflecting on his political journey, Minister Swapon acknowledged the pressures faced by those working under constant scrutiny. “I understand, from personal experience, the psychological strain endured by individuals living under fear,” he said. “This is particularly true for professionals in the media sector, where the constant watch can impede the free flow of information.”

Swapon emphasised the commitment of the government under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s guidance to strengthen media freedom. He stated, “Since the leadership is aware of these challenges and has integrated press freedom into its broader governance plan, we are determined to cultivate a fear-free environment for journalists in Bangladesh, Insha Allah.”

The Information Ministry’s roadmap, as indicated by the new minister, focuses on enhancing journalistic autonomy, ensuring legal protection for reporters, and promoting transparent communication between the government and media outlets. Analysts suggest that this initiative could mark a significant step toward strengthening democratic practices in the country, provided the policies are implemented effectively.
