Highest Honour to Be Given to Freedom Fighters

The Minister of Liberation War Affairs, Hafiz Uddin Ahmed (Bir Bikram), has directed that freedom fighters visiting the ministry be accorded the highest respect and hospitality. Speaking at a consultation meeting with ministry officials on Wednesday, the minister emphasised the need to honour the veterans appropriately and ensure their sacrifices are duly recognised in all spheres of national life.

“Since the country’s independence, freedom fighters have not always received the recognition and respect they deserve,” he remarked. “All officials must be conscious of their responsibilities and ensure that every freedom fighter is received with utmost courtesy and sincerity when they come to the ministry.”

During the meeting, the minister also underscored the importance of preserving the spirit and history of the Liberation War and maintaining the dignity of those who fought for the nation’s freedom.

Reflecting on Bangladesh’s historic struggle, Hafiz Uddin Ahmed recalled that then-Major and later President, the martyred President Ziaur Rahman, made the proclamation of independence from the Kalurghat Radio Centre in Chittagong. He highlighted the pivotal role of the East Bengal Regiment (EBR) and East Pakistan Rifles (EPR) in forming the Mukti Bahini, which fought valiantly and ultimately secured victory in the Liberation War.

“The Liberation War stands as a unique example of unified popular resistance, with young people participating spontaneously,” he noted. Drawing on his personal experiences on the battlefield in 1971, he said: “Despite facing severe discrimination and oppression, the people of Bengal rose with extraordinary courage to fight for independence. Thousands of students, youth, and ordinary citizens joined the struggle, confronting the Pakistani army as a united front, and their unity was instrumental in achieving victory.”

The minister concluded by instructing officials to maintain punctuality, professional integrity, and a service-oriented approach in all their duties. Senior officials of the ministry were present at the meeting.
