Eight Advisers Assigned Portfolios in Tarek Rahman’s Cabinet

In a significant administrative move aimed at consolidating the executive branch, the government led by Prime Minister Tarek Rahman has officially allocated portfolios to eight newly appointed advisers. The announcement was formalised through a gazette notification issued by the Cabinet Division on Friday, 20 February 2026.

This development follows the appointment of ten advisers earlier this week, marking a decisive step in the government’s efforts to streamline governance and expedite policy implementation across key sectors. The assigned roles include high-profile political figures and technical experts, split between those holding the rank of Cabinet Minister and those holding the rank of Minister of State.

Ministerial Appointments and Political Strategy

Among those accorded the rank of Minister, the government has placed a heavy emphasis on political strategy and fiscal management. Three senior stalwarts—Mirza Abbas Uddin Ahmed, Nazrul Islam Khan, and Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed—have been appointed as Political Advisers. This triumvirate is expected to navigate the administration through the complex domestic political landscape.

In terms of technocratic leadership, Md. Ismail Zabiullah has been entrusted with the Ministry of Public Administration, a critical role for civil service reform. Meanwhile, noted economist Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir has been assigned the Ministry of Finance, signalling the government’s intent to focus on macroeconomic stability and fiscal discipline.

Portfolios for Ministers of State

The allocation for advisers holding the rank of Minister of State reveals a focus on security, technology, and human resource development. Notably, Brigadier General (Retd.) Shamsul Islam has been assigned to the Ministry of Defence, while Rehan Asif Asad will oversee the dual portfolios of Post, Telecommunications & IT and Science & Technology.

Perhaps the most expansive remit was granted to Mahdi Amin, who has been tasked with overseeing four distinct sectors, including Education and Overseas Employment.

Table of Portfolio Allocations

Name of Adviser Assigned Rank Assigned Portfolio(s)
Mirza Abbas Uddin Ahmed Minister Political Adviser
Nazrul Islam Khan Minister Political Adviser
Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed Minister Political Adviser
Md. Ismail Zabiullah Minister Ministry of Public Administration
Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir Minister Ministry of Finance
Brig. Gen. (Retd.) Shamsul Islam Minister of State Ministry of Defence
Mahdi Amin Minister of State Education; Primary & Mass Education; Expatriates’ Welfare; Labour & Employment
Rehan Asif Asad Minister of State ICT; Science & Technology

Driving Administrative Momentum

The redistribution of these responsibilities is widely viewed as a tactical manoeuvre to revitalise the civil service and address pressing economic challenges. By empowering this diverse group of advisers, the Prime Minister aims to bring both veteran political experience and academic expertise to the forefront of national decision-making.

Government insiders suggest that these appointments will ensure that the administration remains responsive to the needs of the electorate while maintaining a firm grip on the machinery of state.
