The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has issued a warning of strong winds and thunderstorms over three northern regions of the country, with gusts reaching up to 60 kilometres per hour. The advisory, issued on Tuesday (24 March), is in effect until 6:00 pm and specifically addresses inland river ports.
According to the forecast, the districts of Rangpur, Dinajpur, and Mymensingh are likely to experience temporary gusty or stormy winds blowing from the west or northwest at speeds ranging between 45 and 60 km/h. These winds may be accompanied by rainfall or thunderstorms, prompting authorities to raise 1st-level (reissued) warning signals at the affected river ports.
The meteorological office also reported that, as of 9:00 am, an upper-air trough associated with a low-pressure area is located over West Bengal and adjacent regions, while the seasonal normal low-pressure system remains over the southern Bay of Bengal. This atmospheric setup is expected to produce temporary gusts of wind and thunderstorms with rain in parts of Rangpur, Mymensingh, and Sylhet divisions. Elsewhere in the country, the weather is expected to remain mostly dry, with occasional partial cloudiness. Daytime and nighttime temperatures nationwide may rise slightly.
The table below summarises the key warnings for the northern districts:
| District | Wind Direction | Wind Speed (km/h) | Rainfall Type | Warning Signal |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rangpur | West/Northwest | 45–60 | Thunderstorms | 1st-level (reissued) |
| Dinajpur | West/Northwest | 45–60 | Thunderstorms | 1st-level (reissued) |
| Mymensingh | West/Northwest | 45–60 | Thunderstorms | 1st-level (reissued) |
Experts have advised residents and riverine operators in these areas to remain vigilant. Small boats and fishing trawlers should limit movements during periods of strong winds and thunderstorms. Local authorities have also been instructed to monitor water levels and ensure public safety at river ports.
Over the next five days, meteorologists predict that the weather is likely to gradually stabilise across most parts of the country. However, today remains a day for heightened awareness for those living and working in the northern districts. The advisory highlights the importance of precautionary measures to protect lives, property, and navigation along the country’s inland waterways.
Overall, the forecast serves as a timely reminder for communities in Rangpur, Dinajpur, and Mymensingh to prepare for short-lived but potentially severe weather conditions, while the rest of the nation can expect mostly dry weather with slight temperature increases.
