Police to Interrogate Youths Roaming Late at Night

The Education Minister, Dr A.N.M. Ehsanul Hoque Milan, has issued a stern directive to local law enforcement, mandating the interrogation of teenagers found wandering the streets late at night. The announcement signals a significant shift towards more rigorous social monitoring to curb juvenile delinquency and maintain public order.

Ensuring Discipline on the Streets

Speaking during an exchange of views with local administration officials in Kachua, Chandpur, on Friday afternoon, the Minister emphasised that unsolicited nocturnal movements by youths must be curtailed. Under the new directive, police are authorised to question minors regarding their whereabouts, their destinations, and their reasons for being out after hours.

Addressing potential civil liberties concerns with a pragmatic—if controversial—stance, the Minister remarked:

“Police will now ask why they are out, where they have been, and why they were there. If this leads to a constitutional violation, we shall address that later. However, this must happen; there is simply no alternative.”

A Crusade Against Corruption

Beyond the scope of juvenile discipline, Dr Milan utilised the platform to reinforce his commitment to transparent governance. He issued a candid ultimatum to the civil servants and police officers in attendance, declaring a “zero-tolerance” policy regarding financial malpractice.

The Minister’s pledge to maintain the “sanctity” of his constituency was underscored by a direct offer to those who may not share his rigorous ethical standards. He urged any official unwilling to adhere to his anti-corruption mandate to seek a transfer immediately, offering to facilitate moves to other districts for those who cannot commit to his vision.

Key Directives from the Ministerial Address

Policy Area Specific Action / Mandate
Juvenile Oversight Mandatory police interrogation of teenagers out late at night.
Public Order Elimination of “unsolicited” roaming in residential and public areas.
Civil Service Ethics Strict “Zero-Corruption” pledge for all local administration.
Staffing Transfers Voluntary transfers for officials unable to meet ethical standards.

High-Level Administrative Presence

The meeting was attended by the highest echelons of the district administration, highlighting the gravity of the Minister’s declarations. Key attendees included:

Md. Nazmul Islam Sarkar (District Commissioner, Chandpur)

Rabiul Hasan (Superintendent of Police)

Mahmudul Hasan Russel (Upazila Nirbahi Officer, Kachua)

Borhan Uddin (Officer-in-Charge, Kachua Police Station)

The Education Minister concluded by reiterating that his primary goal is to transform Kachua into a model of administrative integrity, where both the youth are disciplined and the public servants are beyond reproach.
