In Damudya, Shariatpur, prices of fruits and lemons fell sharply after a mobile court conducted a raid on traders accused of selling these items at inflated rates. Two vendors were fined 10,000 BDT each by the Upazila Executive Officer and Executive Magistrate Md. Salahuddin Ayubi during the operation.
The raid took place on Sunday, 21 February, at the Damudya fruit market. Officials inspected the market to ensure compliance with fixed pricing regulations. Traders found charging above the stipulated rates for fruits and lemons were penalised under the Consumer Rights Protection Act.
Speaking to the press, Md. Salahuddin Ayubi emphasised that such operations would continue to keep the prices of essential commodities within reach of ordinary consumers. “Any overcharging or irregularity will result in strict legal action against the offenders,” he warned.
Local shoppers welcomed the authorities’ initiative, noting that it provided immediate relief in the cost of daily necessities. Many residents have also called for regular market monitoring to prevent future price hikes. Following the announcement of the fines, other vendors in the market promptly reduced the prices of fruits and lemons, easing the financial burden on ordinary buyers.
The swift response not only reassured customers but also sent a strong signal to traders about maintaining fair pricing practices.

The operation underscores the administration’s commitment to protecting consumer rights and ensuring that essential goods remain affordable, especially in smaller towns where price manipulation can have a direct impact on daily life. Market observers noted that such enforcement actions, coupled with public awareness, are crucial in maintaining economic fairness and trust between traders and consumers.
