Public Outcry Spurs Court Action on Assault

A horrific incident in the village of Nizlathimara, Patharghata, Barguna, has drawn national attention after a woman and a young man were bound with ropes and physically assaulted. The ordeal reportedly began late at night on Sunday, 1 March, and included the distressing removal of the woman’s three-month-old child from her arms, intensifying the cruelty of the attack.

The assault was captured on a mobile phone and circulated widely on social media, shocking the conscience of the community and prompting immediate legal scrutiny. Taking cognisance of the viral footage and media reports, the Patharghata Judicial Magistrate’s Court has registered a suo motu case. Judicial Magistrate Md. Panir Sheikh authorised the filing of the case, a fact confirmed by court bench assistant Mohammad Mubin.

The court’s order highlights several alarming details:

Key Details Description
Victims One adult woman and one young man
Nature of Assault Physically tied with rope and beaten
Child Involved Three-month-old removed from mother’s arms
Location Nizlathimara, Patharghata Sadar Union, Barguna
Court Action Suo motu case registered by Patharghata Judicial Magistrate
Applicable Law Child Act 2013 & Penal Code 1860
Investigation Deadline Report due by 10 March 2026

The court observed that the assault footage clearly showed physical abuse, the forced separation of the infant, and the presence of local representatives at the scene. Accordingly, the Officer-in-Charge of Patharghata Police has been instructed to conduct a detailed investigation and submit a report by 10 March. The viral video and associated newspaper clippings have also been preserved for evidence.

The case has ignited tension locally. On Wednesday, 4 March, a public human chain protest was held in Nizlathimara. During the demonstration, a local resident openly threatened the victim with expulsion from the area, a statement that was captured on video and shared online. The protest, reportedly backed by Mohammad Shagir Alam, acting chairman of Sadar Union and BNP convener, also included speakers questioning the legitimacy of the court’s suo motu case and citing alleged prior land disputes with the woman.

The victim, however, claims that she was deliberately framed due to an old land dispute, and that she and her child were brutally assaulted. She has expressed fear for her safety following the public threats. Local social development activist Golam Kibria condemned the intimidation, emphasising that no individual or political leader has the right to remove anyone from their home.

Patharghata Police have confirmed that the investigation began on Wednesday as per the court’s directive. Police presence has been increased in the area to ensure the woman’s protection, and authorities have vowed to take all necessary legal measures once the investigation is complete.

The shocking video, combined with the public threats, has sparked widespread outrage, highlighting the urgent need for accountability and safety for victims of such violent acts.
