In a dramatic escalation that signals the widening theatre of conflict between the West and Tehran, a United States submarine has torpedoed and sunk the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena in the international waters of the Indian Ocean. The incident occurred shortly after the vessel departed India, where it had been participating in prestigious multinational naval exercises as an official guest of New Delhi.
The IRIS Dena was a high-profile participant in the MILAN 2026 naval exercise and the International Fleet Review, hosted by the Indian Navy in Visakhapatnam from 15 to 25 February. Photographs released by Indian defence officials as recently as 17 February showed the Iranian crew standing proudly on their deck against the backdrop of the Iranian flag.
As the vessel commenced its return journey to Iran, it entered international waters near the coast of Sri Lanka, where it was intercepted by a US attack submarine. The Sri Lankan Navy, responding to a frantic distress signal, arrived to find only an oil slick and surviving sailors clinging to debris.

The Pentagon released footage on the social media platform X showing the moment of impact—a catastrophic underwater explosion that reportedly broke the ship’s spine. US Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth described the frigate as a “prized catch,” asserting that US operations are no longer confined to the borders of the Middle East. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump reiterated that the total elimination of the Iranian Navy is now a primary strategic objective.
Tehran has reacted with fury. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi condemned the strike as an “atrocity on the high seas,” warning that the United States would soon face “extreme remorse” for targeting a vessel that was transitioning from a peaceful diplomatic mission.
The sinking has ignited a fierce political storm in India. Historically, New Delhi has maintained a delicate balancing act between its strategic partnership with Washington and its long-standing ties with Tehran. The silence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government regarding the strike on a former “guest” vessel has drawn sharp criticism from the opposition.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi remarked that the conflict has reached India’s “doorstep,” while former Foreign Secretary Kanwal Sibal noted that while India bears no responsibility for the US action, Washington has displayed a blatant disregard for Indian sensitivities by attacking a ship invited to the region by the Indian Navy.
