Historic Speech Echoes in Neglected Party Office

In a remarkable and unexpected occurrence, the near-abandoned office of the district Awami League in Naogaon, where party activities have long been suspended, resonated with the historic 7 March speech of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The incident took place on Saturday (7 March) morning at the party office located at Sarishahati Mor in the town, drawing significant curiosity and discussion among local residents.

According to eyewitnesses, the speech was broadcast via a small loudspeaker on the third floor of the dilapidated building. “The office has been in a state of disrepair for years, with broken walls and scattered debris. Suddenly hearing Bangabandhu’s iconic voice was surprising and emotionally stirring for many of us,” said a local resident.

The event gained wider attention when a video recording surfaced on the social media platform Facebook. The footage clearly shows the historic speech playing through a modest microphone amid the decaying infrastructure of the office. However, details regarding who installed the microphone, when it was set up, or how the broadcast was organised remain unknown. Notably, no active members or leaders of the district Awami League were present at the scene.

Some party affiliates later shared the video on their personal Facebook accounts, confirming the unusual event.

Naogaon Sadar Model Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge, Niyamul Haque, commented, “We have received reports of such an incident. Later, local residents removed the microphone. The circumstances surrounding who arranged it are still under investigation.”

Locals speculate that the act may have been a tribute to the nation’s historic legacy, though the unusual setting—the nearly ruined party office—has made it a striking visual and symbolic event for the community. It has also reignited interest in the 7 March speech among younger generations, emphasising its enduring significance in Bangladesh’s struggle for independence.

The table below summarises the key details of the incident:
