The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has issued warnings for thunderstorms and gusty winds over the next 24 hours across eight divisions of the country. The department has also indicated the possibility of scattered hail in certain areas.
On Tuesday evening (17 March), rainfall was recorded in 18 out of 61 observation stations nationwide. Some regions experienced strong gusts of wind. The highest rainfall was recorded in Srimangal with 49 millimetres, followed by Netrokona with 25 mm, Dinajpur 16 mm, and Mymensingh 13 mm.
According to the meteorological bulletin, a low-pressure trough is currently situated over West Bengal and adjoining areas, while the seasonal normal low-pressure system persists over the southern Bay of Bengal. As a result, the bulletin forecasts that over the next 24 hours, isolated places in Sylhet, Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barisal, and Chattogram may experience temporary gusty or squally winds accompanied by rainfall or thunderstorms. Some of these areas may also see isolated hailstorms. Day and night temperatures are expected to remain largely unchanged nationwide.
The department’s forecast for the coming days is as follows:
| Date | Divisions Affected | Weather Forecast |
|---|---|---|
| 18 March | Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barisal, Chattogram, Sylhet | Isolated squally winds, thunderstorms, possible hail; slight increase in temperatures |
| 19 March | Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Sylhet; isolated areas in Dhaka, Khulna, Barisal, Chattogram | Temporary gusty winds, thunderstorms, scattered hail |
| 20 March | Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Sylhet; isolated areas in Dhaka, Khulna, Barisal, Chattogram | Squally winds, thunderstorms, scattered hail; slight decrease in temperatures |
Experts advise residents in the affected divisions to exercise caution, particularly in low-lying areas prone to waterlogging or flash floods. Farmers and outdoor workers are urged to protect crops and equipment from sudden strong winds and hail. Boaters and fishermen should remain vigilant for rough seas and lightning activity.
The Meteorological Department has emphasised that while the thunderstorms are likely to be isolated, their intensity could temporarily disrupt normal activities. Citizens are advised to stay updated through official bulletins, and ensure preparedness for any sudden changes in weather conditions over the next few days.
This sequence of weather events highlights the transitional climatic phase affecting Bangladesh, characterised by unstable air masses and intermittent low-pressure systems, which can trigger severe thunderstorms and isolated hail.
