Eid Travel Crowds Overwhelm Bhanga Train

Faridpur’s Bhanga Railway Station witnessed unprecedented passenger congestion on Wednesday, 18 March, as travellers boarded the Nakshikantha Commuter Train bound for Khulna. The midday service from Dhaka arrived at Bhanga approximately 30 minutes late, yet every carriage was already filled to capacity, leaving many passengers standing, and some even climbing onto the roof.

Passengers were seen helping each other climb onto the train’s roof, gripping hands and railings to secure themselves. Those boarding at Bhanga faced particularly acute crowding, with some standing on the engine’s side railings or seated precariously atop the engine cover, determined to reach their destinations safely.

Despite the overcrowding, the ticket fare remained unchanged, providing some relief to travellers amidst the discomfort.

Passenger Experiences

Passenger Origin Destination Experience
Vojhari Mitra Dhaka Khulna Stood on engine railing due to lack of seats; willing to endure discomfort to reach home
Tajim Hossain Chapainawabganj Kushtia (connecting train) Sat on engine cover; found journey uncomfortable but prioritized safety
Barun Bhanga Khulna Stood throughout journey; accepted discomfort for the joy of returning home

“I had no choice but to stand on the engine railing,” said Vojhari Mitra. “It is uncomfortable, but getting home safely is more important.”

Tajim Hossain, travelling from Chapainawabganj via Bhanga, echoed similar sentiments. “The journey isn’t very comfortable today, but I boarded the train with hope of reaching home safely,” he said. Barun, another passenger, added, “Standing is hard, but the happiness of going home makes it worthwhile. Reaching safely is my main concern.”

Station Authority Comments

Roni Byapari, Master of Bhanga Railway Station, explained the reason for the congestion: “The pressure from passengers returning home for Eid is enormous. The Nakshikantha Commuter Train had no vacant seats in any carriage. Even so, a large number of passengers boarded at Bhanga. We expect everyone to reach their destinations safely despite today’s heavy crowd.”

With Eid festivities approaching, authorities have urged passengers to remain cautious, hold onto railings when necessary, and maintain calm to ensure a safe journey.
