Illegal Trawling Boat and Nets Seized, Fisherman Arrested

In a significant enforcement operation, the Bangladesh Coast Guard has seized an illegal artisanal trawling boat along with multiple trawling nets in Maheshkhali, Cox’s Bazar, and arrested one fisherman in connection with the violation. The move is part of ongoing efforts to protect marine resources in the region.

Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujan, Media Officer of the Coast Guard, confirmed the operation on Thursday afternoon. According to him, the seizure followed intelligence reports, prompting a targeted raid at Jyam Ghat in Maheshkhali on Wednesday evening at around 7 pm. The operation was jointly conducted by the Cox’s Bazar and Maheshkhali Coast Guard stations.

During the raid, officials first confiscated one illegal artisanal trawling boat. A subsequent search of the vessel led to the discovery of six trawling nets, collectively valued at approximately 12 lakh Bangladeshi Taka. The arrest of the fisherman involved has been made, and legal proceedings are underway concerning the seized items.

Lieutenant Commander Sujan emphasised that the Coast Guard will continue such operations to safeguard the country’s fisheries. “Protecting marine resources is a top priority,” he stated, “and the Coast Guard will persistently monitor and curb illegal fishing practices.”

The details of the seizure are summarised in the table below:

Item Quantity Approximate Value (BDT) Remarks
Artisanal Trawling Boat 1 4,00,000 Operated illegally
Trawling Nets 6 12,00,000 Used for unauthorised fishing
Arrested Fisherman 1 Legal action pending

Illegal trawling practices, especially during night operations, have long been recognised as a threat to marine biodiversity. Smaller fish and juvenile species are often caught, impacting the ecological balance and the livelihoods of responsible fishermen. Operations like this not only enforce the law but also aim to raise awareness among local fishing communities about sustainable practices.

The seized boat and nets are now in Coast Guard custody pending further legal procedures. Local authorities and environmental experts have welcomed the action, describing it as an essential measure to protect both fish populations and the broader marine ecosystem.

With its strategic patrols and intelligence-led interventions, the Bangladesh Coast Guard continues to assert its role as a guardian of the country’s marine resources, ensuring that illegal fishing does not compromise the future sustainability of its fisheries.
