Bangladesh Dominate Pakistan in U-20 Opener

Malé, Maldives – Bangladesh made a winning start to their SAFF U-20 Championship campaign, defeating long-time rivals Pakistan 2–0 in their opening group match at the National Stadium on Tuesday.

The star of the match was Ronan Sullivan, the United States-born forward of Bangladeshi descent, who scored both goals in his debut for the national U-20 team. His performance ensured a confident victory for the Red and Greens and marked an emphatic beginning to Bangladesh’s campaign.

Before the match, attention had centred on the Sullivan brothers, Ronan and Declan, both of whom are of Bangladeshi heritage. While Declan did not feature in the starting XI, Ronan started and showcased his technical prowess and attacking flair on the field.

The first half was a tactical battle, with both sides creating early chances but failing to convert. Bangladesh dominated possession and dictated the tempo, constantly pressuring Pakistan’s defence. In the opening ten minutes, Bangladesh earned a corner but could not capitalise due to lack of precision in finishing. Pakistan, meanwhile, attempted to apply pressure on the Bangladeshi backline but were quickly overwhelmed as Bangladesh controlled the midfield and forced them to retreat deep into their own half.

Despite sustained attacks and territorial dominance, Bangladesh ended the first half without a goal, leaving players and fans alike hoping for a breakthrough in the second half.

That breakthrough came after the interval. Ronan Sullivan struck twice, demonstrating composure and clinical finishing to secure a 2–0 victory. The win places Bangladesh in a strong position for progression to the semifinals.

This performance continues Bangladesh’s competitive record in age-group SAFF tournaments. Since first participating in 2015, the nation has featured in seven editions across U-18, U-19, and U-20 levels, reaching the semifinals on debut. Bangladesh has won the championship once, in 2024, and finished as runners-up on four other occasions.

Coach and supporters praised the team’s discipline and tactical execution, noting that the side’s attacking cohesion and control of possession were key factors in overcoming Pakistan. With the momentum from this victory, Bangladesh aims to build a strong run in Group B and target another title.

The emergence of players like Ronan Sullivan has also highlighted the increasing contribution of the Bangladeshi diaspora to national football, providing both skill and depth to youth squads ahead of major regional competitions.
