England opener Ben Duckett has withdrawn from the Indian Premier League, despite being selected for the first time by Delhi Capitals at an auction price of 2 crore rupees. The 31-year-old left-handed batsman made the decision just days before the tournament commenced, citing a desire to concentrate on securing his place in the England team, particularly in Test cricket. By stepping back at such short notice, Duckett faces the possibility of a two-year ban under IPL regulations for late withdrawals.
Duckett’s recent international form has been inconsistent. During the 2025 Ashes series in Australia, he scored 202 runs across 10 innings as England suffered a 4–1 defeat. He was included in the T20 World Cup squad but did not feature in any matches, highlighting the challenges he has faced in maintaining a regular spot in the limited-overs formats. Determined to rebuild his confidence and form, Duckett has chosen to return to domestic cricket with Nottinghamshire in the County Championship, prioritising match practice and preparation for England’s upcoming Test fixtures.
Withdrawing after registering with Delhi Capitals exposes Duckett to potential disciplinary action. IPL franchises have historically enforced bans on overseas players who pull out at short notice. In 2025, England captain Harry Brook faced a similar two-year ban for withdrawing after registering, setting a precedent that Duckett is now aware of. Nonetheless, the batsman emphasised that the decision reflects careful consideration of his long-term international career.
In an interview with The Telegraph, Duckett said:
“This was a very difficult choice. I owe an apology to everyone at Delhi Capitals. Being selected was an incredible opportunity, and the IPL is a world-class competition. It would have been thrilling to compete alongside the best players in the world. However, at 31, I believe returning to county cricket is the best decision for my career and my chances with England. I hope one day to represent Delhi, but for now, my focus must be on regaining form and preparing for the Test season.”
Duckett stressed that playing in the County Championship is vital for regaining confidence and consistent form. He views regular domestic cricket as a pathway to revitalising his international career and cementing a role in all three formats for England.
| Player | Age | IPL Team | Auction Price | Reason for Withdrawal | Possible Sanction |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ben Duckett | 31 | Delhi Capitals | 2 crore INR | Focus on England & Tests | Up to 2-year ban |
| Harry Brook | 27 | Delhi Capitals | – | Last-minute withdrawal | 2-year ban |
Duckett’s decision highlights the delicate balance between lucrative franchise cricket and long-term international ambitions, a dilemma faced by many modern cricketers.
