Police have arrested eight people, including a local leader of the Jubo Dal, during a raid on an alleged gambling den in Dimla upazila of Nilphamari.
Dimla police confirmed the arrests on Thursday (30 July), following an overnight operation carried out in the Shalhati area of the upazila on Wednesday (29 July).
The arrested Jubo Dal leader has been identified as Shahidul Islam, convenor of the Dimla upazila unit of the organisation. He is the son of Shahadat Hossain of the Baburhat area in the upazila.
The other arrested individuals were identified as Nirmalendra Roy, 46, son of Suresh Singh Roy; Dinbandhu Roy, 54, son of Shuzaru Barman; Bipul Roy, 32, son of Bajendra Roy; Lablu Islam, 28, son of Lutfur Rahman of the Shalhati area; Rafiqul Islam, 32, son of Nurul Haque of the Akashkuri area; Nur Islam, 45, son of Delwar Hossain; and Taleb Mokhchedur Rahman, 40, of West Golmonda village in neighbouring Jaldhaka upazila.
According to police, an illegal gambling session had allegedly been taking place regularly inside a house in the Shalhati area. Acting on information about the gathering, a police team conducted a raid at the premises late on Wednesday night.
The operation resulted in the arrest of the eight individuals, police said. Various items allegedly used for gambling were also seized from the location.
The arrests come as law enforcement agencies across Bangladesh continue to conduct raids against illegal gambling activities, particularly where such gatherings are alleged to be taking place on a regular basis. Police operations in such cases generally focus on identifying organisers and participants, disrupting recurring gambling sessions and preventing associated public-order concerns.
Dimla Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shawkat Ali Sarker said the arrested individuals had been produced before the court and subsequently sent to jail through judicial proceedings.
Police did not provide further details about the alleged gambling operation or specify the legal provisions under which the case was filed. The investigation into the incident is expected to determine the circumstances surrounding the gathering and the involvement of those arrested.
